Rogan Tuttle looks at the gray sky of Jahnavi. The air is dry and another dust storm is rolling in, and the farming equipment is already being hauled back to a hangar converted into a workshop and supply shed. The bell for prayer rings twice and everyone not on watch or with an immediate job begins filing into service. Rogan has completed his rotation for the day and begins filing in with the crowd. The meal after service is usually the best one and Abbot Balvarrata keeps things short as everyone is tired. He is an elderly man by sangha standards, nearing both sixty and the end of his life as the virulent cancers caused by the liberation treatment enact their final course of health consequence

Rogan stays mixed into the crowd, his natural aversion to standing out winning out over looking for friends. That can wait for later, he thought to himself. Feeling the jostling of a mass of people was comforting in its anonymity. He found himself a place near the electronics, since the Abbot somehow found him whenever the service needed help ever since he arrived. Rogan blamed his stupid smile. Dang thing makes me look like I want to be helpful.

The service has a few moments before it begins and Is started with some advertisements from the Greystar confederacy along with the news (the most recent post in the gal net news channel) The abbot begins getting ready to take the pulpit for a few comments as the reel finishes. This planet of Jahnavi has been incredibly deadly to Greystar explorers and they’re desperately trying to leverage local help to explore some of the ruins - former settlements and military facilities destroyed during the religious war that destroyed so much of this world and released the Liberation agents into the water
Avatar
Rogan's eyes light up as the thought of exploring fantastic ruins races through his mind. He pictures himself sneaking into an old fortress, never being seen as he investigates the haunted spaces. He shows his war prizes to the Abbot, and the Abbot praises his resourcefulness. As he finishes, that sappy grin takes over his face as he steadies himself to talk to the Abbot afterwards.
Avatar
Service is quicker than normal this evening. The abbot stumbles in a few places as the effects of the brain tumors advance on his memory and speech centers but he’s strong enough to finish and you’re able to get his message about sacrifice and the duty one has to this family culture. Everyone begins breaking off to eat as the abbot slowly takes the microphone stand apart to be packed away until morning
Avatar
Rogan finds himself pulled toward the Abbot, starting to help him finish the cleanup before he realized what he was doing. His smile was evident as he started asking the older man questions. "Abbot Balvarrata, is it true that we can go and explore some ruins from the old war? That sounds like a real exciting thing. Do they pay for that? Do they send us in by ourselves? What would we find? What would they expect me to bring back? What kind of monsters are in the wreckage?" he realizes that he never stopped to wait for answers in his haste. So, he finally shuts his mouth and waits. Smiling and helping.
Avatar
The Abbot is serene as always. He doesn’t seem troubled by the questions. “The expeditions are mounted by Greystar. They usually do send help but the conditions are that those expeditions are filled out by locals. It helps build the trust between us. Many have defense systems or old battle robots that still functional. There may be others out there that we have not run across”

“Part of exploring is finding out”
Avatar
Rogan smiles and nods through the Abbot's answers, waiting for him to finish, "How do I sign up, Abbot Balvarrata? I bet I could find stuff that nobody else did."
Avatar
"I'm ready right now. Would they send me out today?" he asks, with a little disappointment after the words come out, since he might have to miss dinner.
Avatar
“Not today. We are expecting a ship tomorrow. The rest of the team will be arriving with them. You don’t want to be in the open desert when the sun goes down anyway. There is no way of knowing what’s out there anymore “ (edited)
Avatar
Rogan's emotions rollercoaster as the Abbot starts with 'not today', but then rebounds when he says tomorrow and he also realizes that he can get dinner, so that smile returns, and he finishes helping with the sermon breakdown. His mind is too excited to understand what he means about his warning, so he replies, "They are coming here? Awesome! I can't wait! Do you need any other help?"
Avatar
"None. Thank you" he manages, the short phrase doesnt seem to tax his mind too much. "Will inform them of your eagerness. You will be sent out with others. Remember to be cautious"
Avatar
Rogan smiles and nods eagerly, "Thank you, Abbot Balvarrata!" he says before turning and running to get his dinner. His excitement overrode his natural desire to hide, so after he arrived for food, he looked around instead of covering up.

Brey Muller is another member of the Sangha who has taken the Liberation treatment. Most who have do not truly have strong friendships, or feel much of anything that isn't devotion to Red Sangha. He none the less has been friendly to you, as a fellow psychic. Members of the Black Lotus and the Psychic Coterie attached to them are very few given the many long years of battle. It was hoped that you would take the Liberaiton and truly join them, but Muller has not pressed the issue more than his first and only offer of it to you- and has been pleasant enough to work with since you refused him thus far.

(Nice. Wasn't expecting an actual contact, so that's a bonus.)
Avatar
He is currently scooping some of the reconstituted protein meal into his plate , deep in thought by time you arrive at dinner
Avatar
Rogan brings his plate to the table, sitting across from Brey, "Good to see you, Brey." He changes to a more quiet, conspiratorial voice to continue without attracting attention, "Did you know about the missions to the ruins? I'm gonna go do it. Do you think there's something special I could do out there?"
22:55
With that, he says a quick prayer and begins eating his food slowly, savoring each bite.
Avatar
“Of course. Everyone has talent to bring to the table. And you’re a psychic too.” His voice is even, the same tone as the abbot. “There is more than enough reason for you to go”
Avatar
Rogan nods, "I know. But is there something that you would be looking for while I'm out there?"
Avatar
"Something... special ... that was lost, maybe...," he said, hoping Red Sangha needed his help finding something.
Avatar
(The whole idea is they don’t know what’s even out there anymore. That’s why you’re exploring. Brey wouldnt even have a guess )
04:29
“I suppose so. Good luck finding whatever that might be then. “
Avatar
(Gotcha. In that case, he's ready to go.)
Avatar
"Thanks! I'll tell ya all about it when I get back."
Avatar
Brey goes back to picking at his sad dinner. You eat, wash, and can hardly sleep as morning comes and the blocky form of a Greystar free merchant cuts across the sky a fair distance away. It sets down 200m from the walled settlement The Red Sangha lives in, and you can see ten figures emerge from the craft, only half of them are the armed adventuring type.
Avatar
His interest piqued, and with nothing else to do before breakfast, Rogan tests some of his sneakiness by racing to the edge of the wall, getting a count on who is staying at the transport versus coming into camp, and shadowing the ones coming in to listen to what they talk about.

(usually a scene ends up being the entire dungeon crawl the way we do things, hanging out here in the village and then getting to the adventure area would be different scenes so you'd get the effort back, un;ess something is effort for the day, which you wouldnt get back unless we had 8 hours of rest somewhere safe)

(Then, sure. Second try was a 9.)
Avatar
There is a site to the far south they're interested in where a ship might have crashed from during the schism. Compared to what is flying now, it might not be valuable as a space vessel, but if the spike drive and reactor work - a nuke snuffer and power plant for the city are two things that the Red Sangha can't afford to turn its noses up at
Avatar
Rogan takes that in and breaks out of his stealth to walk up to and talk to the pilot (if he can figure out who that is), "Are you the pilot for the mission to the ruins that we were told about? I've been dying to work on something more complicated than Comms gear. Do you need any help fixing up your ship before we go? Oh, sorry. I forgot. Hi. My name's Rogan. Rogan Tuttle. Tech and Pilot-in-training, plus I've got a couple of other skills."
Avatar
"Hi Rogan. Yes I'm the pilot, but I wouldn't be ruin diving with you. You're walking home if something happens to me. Were you selected to come with us?"
Avatar
"Absolutely!" he says, with an excitement that burns down a bit as he wonders who will be going with him. "Am I the first to show? Or did you bring other divers with you?"
Avatar
"No one's gone as far as to track us down before we meet with the Abbot, so I'd say you're the first"
Avatar
Rogan grins that grin, feeling proud at being first, and with a little extra information. So, he decides to go ahead and ask more questions until it's time to meet the Abbot and whomever else is going, "Since we're here, could you tell me about how we'll be getting there, and then getting in?"
Avatar
“I’d rather do this briefing once with the entire team but if you give me your name I’ll make sure you’re picked. You’ve got the right head on for all this.”
Avatar
Rogan repeats his full name to him with that mixed emotion of having to wait, while still expecting the coming excitement and adventure to make the wait well worth it. (edited)
Avatar
The meeting with the abbot is over an hour and you’ve worn a small furrow into the dust outside the temple doors before they re emerge as you pace endlessly. Three other red sangha members look to have been selected and the pilot waves you over so the entire briefing can happen at once. They’ve all got somber looks on their faces
Avatar
Rogan looks at them, wondering why they would go through a mind-altering that would take away parts of them, but puts that away as the thought of the upcoming briefing and adventure struck him. He dashes over, very ready to listen with a smile of excitement on his face. "I'm here! Annnnd ready!"
Avatar
(He'll start asking any questions from those he already asked, if the briefing doesn't cover it:) (could you tell me about how we'll be getting there, and then getting in?) (how do we leave, and what could we bring out, could we have transport for the bigger items, and how do we get ourselves picked up if the initial pickup has a problem?) (what can we keep!?!)
Avatar
The free merchant the Greystar team arrived in is your way there since its capable of atmospheric flight. It will also be your way out, and its 100 tons of empty space inside is enough to move bigger items you find. We're salvaging a ship crash, and the Red Sangha settlement here is getting the spike drive and reactor from it- which should end up taking most of the room inside. Any smaller items you find aboard the ship you can take. There may be security bots aboard (a quick note though, SWN discourages basically picking up every single piece of scrap metal you come across, if there's something big or worth taking ill be sure to signpost it)

Avatar
(He's ready to go. I don't think there's much more for him to say.)
Avatar
Rogan understands that there's only one way to get the stuff out. They have to eliminate the security bots. All of them. "I think I get it. We clear the bots, you come in and we load up the ship. I'm ready to head out."
Avatar
The adventure team heading into the wreck is made of six people, three from Red Sangha, and three from Greystar itself representing an equal partnership. You seem to be the only psychic among the group. The free merchant lowers its ramp and the pilot heads forward into the cockpit to get the ship into atmosphere once you're all aboard. The wreck is far distant to the south and you have a few hours of flight time before getting there, as everyone settles in for the short trip. You're invited to use the locker and armory aboard to borrow any gear you think you might need
Avatar
Rogan immediately heads to the locker and armory, hoping to find something better than what he has. He especially wants to strap on a rifle, along with some batteries and comms gear, ooh, and maybe a grenade, although he doubts they would let him have grenades. He doesn't hold out hope for combat armor, but he looks, nonetheless. He is almost completely full of hope, so he looks without worrying whether he'll be disappointed. Once prepared, he hikes up to the pilot's cabin to ask to watch, "Do you mind if I watch? I'd really love to get a little flight time in, if you want a bit of a break. I wouldn't know where we're headed yet, but I can follow a flight plan." (edited)
Avatar
(Just denote what you're actually taking, and add it to your sheet so we have the right items readied/stowed)
19:49
"The Confederacy would have me if I let you fly it and we happened to crash, but you're more than welcome to sit in the co pilot seat and I'll explain some of what I'm doing to you"
19:49
"Government issue. You understand"

(Rogan would definitely upgrade with:) (Combat Rifle) (-or Laser Rifle if there's no combat rifle-) (4 batteries) (Combat Field Uniform) (Compad) (Field radio) (Binoculars) (Rations-3 days) Rogan answers, still very excited to be able to sit up front and talk to the pilot, "I do. I don't want to get you in trouble, but I'd love to watch and sit up here." (edited)

Avatar
Rogan watches the pilot, asking questions about the positions of the craft's gauges, displays, and controls. After a bit, he starts asking what the pilot might know about the ruined vessel and its bots, "What kind of fight do you think the security bots will put up? They would be ..., what, a couple decades old, right?" (edited)
Avatar
(He really isn't expecting much of an answer, since nobody knows what's out there. He's hoping the guy has a history background, but is ready to land and go explore, even without an answer.)
00:11
(Before he leaves, Rogan will ask the group their talents, and will say that he's good with a gun, fixing stuff, piloting, and sneaking around. He wants to know if there's a leader, who can do what in a scrap, and who else is carrying a radio.) (edited)

The readout of the wreck and where things should be begin generating on the ship console and your compads as you begin setting down 500m from the wreck outside of weapons range
Avatar
Rogan uses his binoculars as they get closer to look at the entries, looking for tracks or signs of security systems. He reports what he sees and advises to get a look all the way around the ship before entering.
Avatar
The best way in looks like the botanical garden at the head of the ship. The dome is partially broken open to expose it to the wasteland sun. You don’t see any tracks outside or any signs of security systems or bots from the outside - but it’s a decently sized ship and you’ll no doubt see something once aboard
Avatar
As they get closer to the ship, Rogan tells another armed person of the group to use the cover from the walls of both sides of the broken opening to look inside the Botanical Garden before a third should move inside to start clearing the space of defenses. "Once we get inside, we need someone to be scanning for movement and one or two more to investigate for valuables as we go." He continues, "If we start taking fire, everyone is helping with that. Nobody is safe until that bot is down. Or bots."
13:57
"We're here for the reactor and drive, but if this thing was a science ship, there may be some science-y stuff around."
Avatar
Rogan considers his plan some more before letting someone else enter the ruined ship. He realizes that he should try to sneak in with them covering him, rather than ask someone else to walk in. He quietly puts his hand in front of the person preparing to move and says, "Cover me. I'll go in first." At which point, he stealthily moves in, going to the best, nearest point of cover.
Avatar
(sneak/dex, and this is a new scene in terms of effort if it ends up being important for your decision making)
Avatar
(Check result 8, no effort this time)
Avatar
You sneak up to the cracked biodome and peer into the darkened interior. Overgrown plants dominate the space almost entirely and they'll need to be hacked through to get to the other side of the chamber and deeper into the ship. Local animals have also made dens in here, taking advantage of the shelter and greenery to make homes. Birds caw in the small fruit trees and you can hear rodents skittering through the brush
Avatar
Looking disappointed at being held back by the greenery, although impressed that it grew without care, he stows his binoculars and switches hands from holding his rifle. He pulls out his monoblade and switches to his pistol while he works on cutting through the foliage. He asks, "Let's keep someone on scanning duty while two people with weapons cover the other three making a path. Be sure to let us know if you see movement that's from something that is big enough to hurt us." He rethinks, frowning in his worry, "Unless it slithers. Shoot it if it slithers, no matter what size it is. Double tap, just to make sure."
Avatar
"Hey, can anyone identify these fruits? They might make some nice, fresh dessert."
Avatar
(If nobody seems tech-savvy enough to use a Compad Dataslab to ID the fruit trees, he will holster his pistol for the time needed to check.) (edited)
Avatar
Someone will take a look at them while the rest of you begin cutting a path toward the airlock door leading deeper into the ship. It is difficult work and most of the growth is very thick. You scatter plenty of small animals from their burrows as you continue working and after an hour of cutting, taking small breaks, and cutting some more- you're at the flywheel to open the sealed door into the rest of the ship. The fruit seems mundane enough. Exotic to this world due to the conditions here, but nothing that has not been seen in other parts before
Avatar
(Once we clear the door, we'll repeat the entry into what should be the Comfort Center) Rogan confirms the armed two are on each side of the door while he unseals the door. He also makes sure the other three are off to the side and not in a straight line behind the door, like targets. He pushes open the door partway and backs away, just in case. After a short wait, he scans the room for movement or unmoving bots.

03:42
The comfort center is the relaxation area at the front of the ship. It’s missing a galley it must be somewhere else in the vessel. The furniture bolted to the deck has been pockmarked and moth eaten. A dead holoscreen with a crack running down the middle hangs on the eastern wall next to a vent where the grate has been pulled away and hangs by a single screw
Avatar
Rogan is not an extremely clever person, so he will methodically clear the rooms to make sure they are empty of bots. But First, he will see if he can fix the library system. Then, he checks the vent for guests with his thermal optics, and then the other rooms. The three labs, observatory, dark room, and activity locker. (Edited) (edited)
Avatar
(We're going to take this one room at a time, because there are different things in all of them and shotgunning big blocks of information out here means you're not going to read most of it)
13:44
The vent has some warm tracks in it. They're large. You can't tell what they might be from- but it is not mechanical. The interior bulkhead leading into the central library is jammed, it refuses to rise past 1/4 of the way up its normal height and is too low to crawl under. Access to the library means access to the rest of the ship, as the other rooms are hubbed around it
Avatar
Rogan looks at the bulkhead in frustration. But before he does anything else, he warns the crew, "Be alert! There's something big that's been in that vent, and it's a critter. We're not hunting here, so don't worry about damaging the thing. Take it down unless it's not trying to kill us." As a fixer, he does the standard first steps to opening the bulkhead, he looks at it to see if there is an obvious problem jamming it, and asks any of the others if they see anything. If closing it could help dislodge whatever is jamming it, he'll do that next. "Trying to muscle it open may jam it worse, so let's see if we can clear the thing. If we have to, I hope someone brought a crowbar or two." (He would do that last.)
Avatar
(fix/int, at +2 since one of them has a post-tech tool kit)
Avatar
(Snake eyes for a 3.)
Avatar
It is now jammed worse. It can be cut through, but you probably will not be inside until late in the afternoon- severely cutting down on your time to explore before pulling back for the night. Heavier tools are deployed from the ship, along with technical support to use them, and you're forced to take a very extended lunch break while the engineers hack away at the bulkhead
Avatar
Rogan frowns in disappointment. But making the best of it, he takes one of the fruits from a tree he's never had before and samples it, looking forward to the fresh taste and texture. When he finds one that he likes, he pulls another off and offers it to the technician that had the tool kit. "Well, this sucks," he comments to the tech. "At least we get a little real food. Who'd have guessed, right?"
Avatar
(Added more goals, since the others were marked at 0)
Avatar
Considering the lost time, Rogan decides to open the bulkhead to the Extra Vehicular Activity Locker after getting into the Comfort Station -first-, then the Library in the center. He tells that to the group of six, along with, "But none of that happens until this first bulkhead opens up. At some point, we'll probably run into that critter from the vent, so that's one thing we need to be looking for. We always need to be ready for a fight because security bots could come from any room." He waits a bit for that to sink in, then adds, "So, as soon as that bulkhead opens, we start clearing rooms. We don't have time to spend here, so let's see what's in that Locker, and then head to the stairs to find what we came for."
Avatar
There is a wrenching screech as the tools that had previously been biting metal cut through the door, finally, the broken metal is kicked inward, and you're free to move into the library from the comfort station. Walking around the ship you were unable to find other ways in and were forced to wait for the cutting to finish. The library is dark, and you hear a faint clicking and whirring in the darkness- there is a processing unit of some kind working inside, somewhere.
Avatar
Rogan thanks the heavy-equipment crew, and proceeds to direct the clearing of the first room, followed by the entry and clearing of the Library. As before, two armed members would flank the door while Rogan sneaks into the room and points out the next steps, while the other three stay behind cover. Rogan investigates each bulkhead to see which doorways are open, and then the computing noises, hoping to be able to gather ship's data into his Dataslab. Meanwhile, he'll make sure a watch is posted on the vent and open doors, in case visitors arrive. "Does anyone have some skills with computers, before I try my luck?"

A floating drone rises from behind the couch 15m away, the source of the processor noise you were hearing. its pair of laser rifles send shots into the doorframe, trying to suppress the two riflemen with you, though failing to hit either one of them due to their strong cover. They shoot back, one of the shots damages it slightly, though not enough to shoot it down. (Rogan up)
Avatar
(First combat questions: 1- Do we get 2 actions?, 2- Can they both be firing, or does 1 have to be a move?)
Avatar
(Starting at page Page 48 of the core rulebook you can find the actions, and what they cost. You have a single main action, a single move action that has to be taken all at once, and any amount of on turn actions when it’s your turn)
Avatar
(I see. It makes more sense now.)
Avatar
Rogan fires a burst at the drone, (11/10, no shock) then moves to the cover of another couch, kneeling behind it and listening for the drones movement.
22:35
_ (Does he have the movement for that? If not, he would skip the better cover for partial cover.) (edited)
Avatar
The shot glanced off its armor plating and you’re able to get into decent half cover for yourself. It’s concealment but won’t stop an aimed shot. The drone fires and destroys some of the couch around Rogan , setting some of the stuffing on fire but he’s not hurt. The two soldiers near the doorframe return fire , both shots connect this time now that they’ve been able to set themselves and your distraction gave them a second to aim. The faceplate of the sentry bot is blown out and the second hit sends its grav plate tumbling out the bottom like it has been disemboweled. It crashes into the floor and catches alight - and is very much out of action
Avatar
Rogan turns back to the bulkhead and compliments them, "Nice shootin'! And thanks. Looks like we're all healthy, so let's keep it up." He looks for a way to connect his Dataslab to the library system, but then remembers the need for speed. So, he sets the group into positions to open the vehicle activity locker. "Let's see what's in here, and then check on the library."

(Ready to open the next door)

(With a program/int you would attempt to try to download the contents quickly)
14:30
The EVA room has several warnings and is sealed off by an airlock door. It warns that in space vac suits and helmets need to be worn beyond this door and that the compartment could open to space at any time. The room is dark and silent from what you can tell. Through the window you can see eight EVA work pods tucked into nacelles. A flywheel in the center of the airlock door can be turned to open it.
Avatar
(Program/INT check: 4) Not expecting to get much out quickly because he never much picked up programming, Rogan turns toward opening the EVA airlock and making sure that there are no living being in there. One thing he expects from space suits is that if there is someone hiding in a suit, his thermal vision shouldn't see past the suit. So, he is pretty sure that they need to check the room and suits out. "Let's open the EVA up, next. Positions!" he says, starting to get used to this.
Avatar
Rogan takes a quick look back at the destroyed bot and couch, confirming that no fires are lingering before opening the EVA inner airlock.
Avatar
(Don’t get too far ahead of me I’m starting to miss things)
21:13
The compad will download before you leave but you’ll have to leave it here and will be without comms if you decide to leave it . The Eva hatch opens and you’re let into the bay. The suits are standard model , reinforced, gyro jets, and cables for grav sleds. Each also has a robust heating system and other amenities to make extended work outside a spacecraft easier and more comfortable
Avatar
Rogan leaves his compad behind, and then uses the radio to call the ship/pilot, "This is Rogan. I'm going to be without my compad while it downloads the wrecks library data. I'll need you to use radio comms, over." While he waits for the response, he confirms all the suits are empty, and the airlock itself has no stowaways or other useful items. (Next step will be finding out which level or levels have the Drive and the Reactor. If his Dataslab has those details, he'll look it up. Otherwise, he'll ask the Pilot if they have those locations.)
Avatar
There is a flight of stairs heading down near the galley and cold storage room. The engineering deck is likely below in the belly of the ship since it is away from the crew areas
Avatar
Rogan has the others follow him down the stairs, with him sneaking as best he can and using his regular and thermal vision to look for trouble. He says, "Follow me with a little distance. You two with the weapons cover me as best you can once we get down there."
Avatar
You enter the drive chamber first and as you head down the stairs you hear clanking in the darkness. Your thermal vision picks out a clanking security bot that is large and hunched in the corner of the room, scanning for threats
Avatar
Rogan continues the standard plan, coming down stealthily, whispering behind him to the others, "Security bot in the corner! Get to cover!" but then ducks to cover with his rifle poised to fire.
Avatar
(It hasn’t seen you yet. You guys would get a surprise round)

Rogan points it out to the folks with guns and directs fire at it, making sure everyone firing fires near cover, and takes cover after firing. "Now," he whispers.
Avatar
(Both of them have missed. We will get your attack result and then initiative)
Avatar
(15/15, no shock) (Initiative: 8)
Avatar
(7 for the war bot) your combat rifle shot hits something important, and you can see its frame rock forward before its gyros correct its balance.
Avatar
Rogan continues to pour fire into the war bot, keeping to cover as he can. He calls out to the others, "Keep firing! We'll take it out. Keep back if you're not well armed."
15:42
(15/15, no shock, again!)
Avatar
(only melee weapons have shock so we won;t expect to see any with a combat rifle) The robot is struck again in the same place, and this time your companions are able to zero their shots. The sentry bot falls, belching dark smoke into the confined compartment through several new holes blasted into it.
Avatar
Rogan smiles a happy smile, feeling like he finally contributed. He leads the way, trying to figure out how to disconnect and remove the drive and reactor. "Nice shots, again! Let's get the drive and reactor removed so they can be taken back to the ship."
Avatar
The technical crew from the Greystar vessel will be handling this portion of the removal job. Darkness will be here soon, and in the meantime your skills are far more useful clearing the remainder of the upper deck, ensuring no security bots alerted to the cutting and salvaging can hurt the engineering crew
Avatar
(The Top Deck, or the entry deck?)
17:58
Confirming that this deck is clear, Rogan leads the others to finish clearing the ship of dangers, remembering that there is a living being here along with other potential bots. He talks to the others, "Let's clear the kitchen and food storage areas next. I have a feeling that whatever it is that was recently in the vent has plenty of meals in there," he says while leading them back upstairs into their normal placements at the door between the library and the kitchen... foyer(?).

Once in place, he'll make sure the three are off to the side, and the two gunners are on each side of the door. He'll nod to them just before he opens the bulkhead and sneaks in.

(the map we used at the beginning is back where we are- if that's what you meant)
Avatar
(Actually, I was asking about whether we needed to clear the uppermost deck, since the stairs looked like they could go down to the engine room or up to a third deck or higher.)
Avatar
(But we have to clear the kitchen, et. al. anyway, so now's as good as anytime.)
Avatar
(I didnt have anything for up there, was just going to leave it at these two decks. Only so much danger/potential combat that is reasonable with you at lvl 1) (edited)
19:17
The door to the kitchen is kicked inwards as you sweep it with the other two Sangha volunteers. Their rifle work is steady, and a security camera is shot apart from over your shoulder- just in case it reports back to anything
Avatar
Rogan smiles back to the gunners, his excitement re-built from finding and clearing the engineering space. He praises them again, "Thanks. Let's check the pantry first. Then the cold storage. Remember folks, there's likely something alive and quick, so if you don't have a weapon, stay behind someone who does." He pauses while everyone takes their places. "Ready... and Go," he says as he opens the pantry door.
Avatar
There is a screech as some kind of rodent creature the size of a cat dives into a bag of half chewed grain stock that the crew would have used for bread or oatmeal back in better days
Avatar
Rogan finds himself unsure of himself, but decides that the rodent could carry disease, so aims at the thing, "Last chance, if anyone wants to study the critter." (If nobody stops him, he'll shoot it.)
Avatar
The confederation is interested in the animals that make up the web of life on its planets. Killing the small creature just because seems like a waste and one of the soldiers you’re with attempts to trap it, making a noose wand out of a long metal stick and thick metal cord
03:26
Just to catch a leg or mid section if possible
Avatar
Rogan says, "Okay, if we're gonna catch him, let me have the wand." Rogan uses effort to Fade and get closer to the rodent to slip the cord around its midsection while it's eating.
Avatar
He thinks to himself, 'This is nuts. I went from deciding to put the rodent on ice to expending more Effort on saving it than I have so far in this ship. This is nuts. I hope no mind reader is reading my thoughts right now.'
Avatar
(You're technically too close to use fade, but this is a minor distraction so we'll say its alright for now)
15:08
The wand slips effortlessly around its middle, a small squeak is the only evidence its been captured before one of them manages to get it into a small cage
Avatar
Rogan has them do a quick search for useful foodstuffs before he returns to planning their next steps, directing them to the cold storage bulkhead. He makes sure they, including the one holding their cage, are all in positions. And then he opens the cold storage. “One two, three.”
Avatar
The power system has failed and you are hit full in the face with the rank smell of dead and spoiled produce. Noxious fumes billow out into the main compartment and it drives the both of your companions back with how powerful it is.
Avatar
Rogan immediately takes a quick thermal scan and closes the door. He then bolts away from the smell toward the library to get some fresher breaths. ”Ugh! That was horrible. Gonna need an EVA suit and the airlock open to open that thing back up. Let’s get back to that later. Onward to the Geology lab. That sounds less smelly.” and he positions everyone again.
Avatar
There is a keypad and heavy electronic seal keeping the lab closed. An interface port on the bottom of the pad allows you to interact with it through your compad- or one of the pads belonging to a team mate
Avatar
(Fix/Int? with +2 advantage for asking for help from the squad?)
Avatar
(none of them are trained in fix so they are not skilled enough to do anything to help you. )
Avatar
*Rogan is hoping that he learned what not to do from the first bulkhead getting jammed problem from earlier, so he will trust his instincts and try to find the open the heavy seal and bulkhead).
Avatar
(we had the advantage of the ship's engineer earlier, but he's downstairs right now working on extracting the vital components of the wreck you were asked to get)
22:06
(fix/int to try to physically force it open, or program/int to try to hack the pad)
Avatar
There is a very loud chirp as the security system begins going off, and a small automated turret lowers from the ceiling- red targeting laser making the 5m space between you and it feel very small indeed.
Avatar
Rogan shrieks, "Ahh! Take cover!" As he gives up on the Compad and switches to the rifle, while looking like he wants to run and take cover in the Comfort Station. He'll try to get off a burst as soon as he can.
Avatar
(Not sure how many of these four he can do, but he'll: let go of the Compad, switch to the rifle, fire a burst, and hide in the Comfort zone unless the couch nearby offers quick cover)
Avatar
(it depends what's readied and stowed. Let me get your sheet in front of me)
23:29
(combat rifle was readied, and dropping an item to the ground is an on turn, so nothing special needed there, you've got your 10m move to get into partial cover, and you can use your main action to fire)
23:29
(we'll keep the same initiative we've been using, so its you and your companions up first before the turret)
Avatar
(14/12, 0) He gets behind the couch and fires, wanting that partial cover and a little extra distance to make sure his shot isn't from too close.
Avatar
The shots hit the ceiling around the iris hatch, but not the actual turret itself, and the suddenness of the turret's appearance has your companions loosing panicked, unaimed shots before they dive into cover alongside you. The turret's laser weapon cycles up, spraying the interior of the comfort space in a hail of suppressing laser bolts (evasion save) (edited)

Time passes, you fade from consciousness to the roar of gunfire and the heat of rounds passing through you and around you. You awaken in the medical deck of the Greystar ship, and the clock on the wall has you at 8 hours from where you'd last checked your compad. Your possessions have been piled up and cleaned- neatly arranged on a chair, and medical equipment has been plugged into you in several places. You feel terrible, but you're alive.
16:26
(one of the guards was able to stabilize you)
16:27
Below, you hear the cargo bay beginning to winch closed, the operation must have been at least a partial success
Avatar
Rogan looks around the Med Deck, looking to see if anyone else was hurt. He also looks for someone to ask questions about what happened.
Avatar
There is a medic, tending to the other two members of the team, who seem not as bad off as you but still wounded.
Avatar
He waits for the medic to leave the other two before he waves, “Hey! What happened? That thing do all this?” he asks, gesturing to the others and the medic.
16:58
“What-all happened afterwards? I imagine they got the drive and reactor brought over, right?”
Avatar
"The entire defense system activated. We went too fast and were not careful or observant of our surroundings. We dragged you out and extracted the objects we needed under heavy fire. Everyone has been wounded, but we were lucky nobody was killed"
Avatar
Rogan thinks about that, “Well, it would have been nice to be able to disable the security. But they would have needed a better or luckier equipment guy to handle that. Seemed like anything I tried to fix went haywire.”
Avatar
THey dont really have anything to add to that, everyone is eager to get some rest. The ship begins to spool up its atmospheric engines to transport you and your precious cargo home. (3xp, 5000 credits)

Rogan falls back into a sleep, still recovering from the energy blast he took from the defensive turret. His sleep is restless, filled with thoughts, and images of people. Some that he’s seen on this trip, and others that he doesn’t recognize. The dreams are so boring that they don’t even wake him up. It’s like he’s dreaming of people going through their normal routines on their trip. Except, their consciousness has their own internal voice, too. It doesn’t sound exactly right for the ones he has started to know better. It’s like Rogan disagrees with how they perceive themselves. ”What is that?” He thinks to himself.
21:26
He wakes up confused, and decides to get up and ask if there’s a new mission coming. So, he gets up, still the worse for wear, and goes to one of the leaders and asks, “What’s the next mission?”
Avatar
"We're going to be landing back at Sangha City in a few minutes. We'll offload the cargo, get you lot settled in the city, and we have urgent business back in confederation space. "

“Urgent business? I don’t really need to settle down, yet. What is it?” he asks, trying to pay attention with all his senses, even to thinking about what he’s thinking.
Avatar
(I should ask what you’ve got in mind going forward if you have any ideas yet
Avatar
(He’s still learning to use his Telepathy skills, so there’s that. He would like to continue doing missions that test his infiltration, but he knows that he needs tech help. He’d also still like to get a chance to drive something, since that and shooting are his best non-psychic skills.)
03:29
(He’s not a real bright guy, so he doesn’t have a lot of different ideas on his own. He might be willing to hold off on missions if someone told him he needed to train. In the end, he sees himself as a sneaky psychic that can get into and out of places and will be trying to train in Far Thought so he can communicate during secret missions.)

17:19
(I understand that he couldn't do any of that until he's in comms with a vendor. I am okay to RP that, although he'd just as well like to order it and have it ready for him wherever he could have it delivered/picked up.)
Avatar
(After further review and consultations, I think I'll copy Raeslin's idea and have the Polymorphic armor mod put on an Icaris Harness, instead. I'm crossing out the entire first note to you, but the order and delivery/pick up is still a question.)
Avatar
(You'd have to wait until you can at least comm a vendor, which we are not able to do from this side of the rift)
Avatar
(Thanks. I expected to have to wait until we got back to Linya's base at least. What would be a reasonable plan for order+pickup/delivery? Or is that dependent on what happens after all this, and what new things we/Rogan need to do?)
Avatar
(I guess I answered my own questions for the short-term. May as well wait until we get back. Rogan probably doesn't even realize that he's been blessed with an unbelievable amount of wealth, more even than the previously-unbelievable 22k credits he recently got.)

From: Greystar Agent Rogan Tuttle To: Corporal Smorkle Good evening, Corporal. When would you be available to work out how I can build on some land? I'd like to make a home on Suha, and could use your help with the legalities and builders. Thank you for your assistance. Respectfully, Agent Rogan Tuttle
Avatar
The Corporal's office needs to know what settlement you'd like to build it in so they can properly assist and provide you an estimate for costs
Avatar
I'd like to build in the country, along the water. Preferably where I can place landing pads for freighter-sized space craft and grav-flyers, which would be my primary means of gathering necessities to the homestead. I would like it to be up-wind of the Singularity Gun so that I could low-tech sail to it in a relatively short time in case of emerging need.
23:06
(He would keep the confidential details for Smorkle himself)

They will deny any sort of access to the gun, representative of the Confederation or not.

(Thats way more in detail than I go but they wouldn’t permit settlement in the southwest corner. That’s too close to the gun )

That Northwest spot seems like a good location, then. Also gives him a jump off point for the Ruins in the far NW for another exploration (assuming that's still unexplored).

(Ships have 30 days generally but you’d only dip into that away from friendly spaceports. We have that for pretty much the whole trip so we don’t need to worry about it. I have 8 days from bourgani to your final destination. For downtime )
Avatar
(Downtime: Rogan 8 days Bourgani-Ahklaqi on Stab: 13-->21/90) Rogan will keep the planet and horizon between the ship and the temple to avoid being targeted by the Gun while landing in the SW, west of the hills on the island west of the island where Crash Site 4 is. (Scoop fuel and head for the opposite side of the planet as the Microwave Gun)
13:56
Avatar
(Fuel scooping takes about 4 days where no downtime can be taken each time we do it. We have been in gsc territory for most of the trip, but some time has passed since you’ve been in the system
👍 1
Avatar
(Sounds fine. I'd rather keep the others safe than risk them being a target more than necessary, so we'll get that scooping done before we land in case we need to leave in a hurry. We'll monitor 'radio' traffic, but won't be announcing our arrival before we land.)
Avatar
While they have time, Rogan will outline the plan to take a driver, physician, and tech in the Chieftain along with the Scout Bike, vacc suits, and Rogan's gear. Flying low, they will land a 'safe' distance from each crash site and make contact with the survivors [the driver can relay people on the bike]. From there, we render medical and technical support as needed and evac any to the Link-1 Medbay if they need. Start with Site 4. (edited)
Avatar
Site 4 is 400km from your landing zone, and you'll ford two rivers on the way. Vehicles will speed the process, but the jungle and foothills are dangerous, and the crew is prepared to be spending at least a few nghts in the deadly terrain. No one has yet run a scan to see if signals have been reported anywhere on the planet since you've returned, and they urge you to do so before rushing off into the unknown
Avatar

(3 - Probably need a trained person for that)
Avatar
You're unable to detect any signal traffic outside of the signals from the microwave gun the late Verethragna was also able to detect and pass on from space. The jungle is incredibly thick, and the world is unkind to electronics as it is
Avatar
Rogan will have the Tech staying back on the ship do periodic scans, along with handling comms to/from the Chieftain. We'll load up everything I talked about (including the scout bike) into the Chieftain and do a hop and a skip towards Site 4.
Avatar
From above the trees, other than the rivers the landscape is an unbroken green canopy of tree cover- aside from the large clearing where the exodus ship, numbered 4, crashed. An Ashen One settlement once existed within it, cannibalized from the electronics and metals of the once mighty spacefaring vessel. You can see the outline of the clearing from above, as the trees around the crash site were felled either by impact or work later (edited)
Avatar
Rogan says to the crew, "Unless anyone has a better option, we'll set down inside the settlement clearing. I mean, we could unload the railguns and try to make our own clearing, but I'm hoping these folks take us as the help we're going to try to be." (edited)

(Gonna stick with the somewhat riskier plan, with a landing on the outer edge of the settlement clearing. If we start taking any fire, we'll fly off and use the other option.)
Avatar
The clearing is not hostile as you set down at the edge of the cleared area and crash site. Nothing stirs in the jungle or in the wreckage as the aircraft sets down and everyone begins getting into their protective gear
Avatar
Rogan gets into his Assault Suit, hooking the Type B battery and his Lux rifle to the Suit. He checks the Suit's comms with the Technicians on the Link-1 and the Chieftain before he tells the others that he is going to do some scouting on his own. "I'll see what I can find before we put anyone else at risk. So far, we haven't found much. But I'd rather keep you all safer than sorry. Keep on the lookout here, and don't be afraid to get out if things get hairy. I'll keep in contact." With that, he exits the Chieftain, closes the hatch behind himself, and Fades while he starts investigating the site.

Avatar
or charged with one of his generators.
Avatar
They would need to figure out how to safely get inside it before any of this is possible. A wrong step, or something resulting in a suit tear means a one way trip to the morgue with how quickly the native viral conditions work.
Avatar
Rogan and the Technician will look for bulkhead doors and keypad openers. If they find one, Rogan will wait until he's (the Tech) out of reasonable range before finishing whatever keying they've done -hit the Enter key- He's pretty optimistic about his Powered Armor being able to take minor damage moderately safely. (edited)
Avatar
(I'll get a map up for you)
21:31
(you'd be approaching from the northwestern side)
Avatar
(So, we're actually digging out the damaged entry on the port side to get to the interior bulkhead door?) Rogan sees what appears to have been a hallway leading into the ship, but was damaged in the crash. He and the Technician work at digging out the rubble to open a human-sized opening for them.
Avatar
(correct)
Avatar
(Then they'll start digging it out.)
Avatar
(Exert/dex, normally wouldn’t bother but doing it carefully is important here)
Avatar
There is a harsh scrape against your suit as rubble falls, exposing the entryway but the sound of thick vinyl being torn on metal is heard even through your sealed helmet. The tech looks up at you aghast through his clear faceplate as the native viral contaminants begin flooding in.
Avatar
Rogan calls the driver on his suit's comms. "Bring. Help. Here."
Avatar
Until he can't move, Rogan is going to trust in the Powered Assault Armor to reseal and walk himself back to the Chieftain's Medbay for the Physician to take a look at him.
Avatar
(I went to sleep and then just woke up before i got back to this)
Avatar
(Sleep is good. 👍 )
Avatar
The driver slowly rumbles the vehicle forward, ramp down to take the technician aboard. They're already under containment protocols onboard the ship. Your power armor seems fine, scratched but not breached -a nd you;d be able to fit through the gap, into the ship and out to the scrap settlement on the other side.
Avatar
Rogan makes sure the Technician gets quickly into the Medbay for the Physician to look at. He looks very concerned for him and is waiting for the Physician to give an update before he moves forward into the wreck.
Avatar
Already, Rogan is realizing that even just moving through the hazardous terrain is going to be too much for anyone not in Powered Assault Armor. He's glad that he decided to land in the clearing, but any further exploration is going to have to be him alone. And he really hopes that this poor Tech didn't pay the price for him to learn. He waits somewhat impatiently, but quietly for the Doc.
Avatar
It is going to take some time for the physician to get a work up completed, and if needed they'll depart and head for the Link before returning to get you
Avatar
Rogan privately walks up to the Driver and asks if he(/she?) would be willing to let Rogan connect their minds for communication. "If we lose radio contact because of interference or other emergency, you and I would still be able to communicate. Up to about 100 kilometers, anyway."
Avatar
They accept the telepathic link, seeing it valuable for keeping in contact if local conditions continue to deteriorate
Avatar
(2/5 Effort for the Scene) Rogan smiles and mentally says, "Thanks." before switching back to verbal communication. "I'm gonna head back into that wreck. If the Doc says the Tech needs to be evac-d, let me know as soon as possible so I can get back here. Even with extra rations and a generator, there's a few things I'd need to survive a week of you-all being gone." With that, he gives the Driver a two-finger quick salute before heading back to the wreck.
Avatar
You have a way through the wreck now, to explore that, and the settlement constructed on the other side that was using this wreck as a concealement
Avatar
(Can you pin the map, please?) Rogan resumes his Fade, and then goes through the opening to the first bulkhead. Unless he has trouble getting through the bulkhead, he looks into the cockpit to see if anyone is there before going anywhere else.

the bridge of the crashed exodus ship is an industrial scale space in its own right, but looks to have been stripped of anything important- likely for settlement construction. No one is here, either.
Avatar
Rogan crosses the aisleway from where he entered, opening a bulkhead heading into a smaller hallway (which ends in another bulkhead door). He opens that one next.
Avatar
The bulkhead door has been wedged closed due to the impact with the ground. It might be pried open, but the right tools and some practiced application of force is needed

Avatar
(4 ... and this is why he brought Techs 🤦)
Avatar
The door does not budge. You think you might be able to scale the wreck and repel down the other side but the climb will cost you several hours of time , and will cut into exploring the settlement on the other side
Avatar
Rogan calls back to the Chieftain to see if the Doc has an update on the Technician. If that's still indeterminate, he'll head back so they can get him to the Link's Medbay.
Avatar
It has only been a few moments so he does not have an update
Avatar
(He heads back to return to the Link-1.) (edited)
Avatar
Rogan goes to the other bulkhead (that heads to the Engineering spaces), realizing that he still hasn't investigated all of the wreck itself. He'll open it up and see what he finds.
Avatar
This bulkhead seems to be easier to open. The drive and reactor have both been utterly pulled apart, their more sensitive components used for civic projects and power generation. Evidence of the components being carried away by the locals during the evacuation is abundant- as tool marks fresher than the rest still mark the decking
Avatar
Rogan is feeling the concern about his Tech along with the missed opportunity because (first) he didn't have any construction equipment to handle the dig safely, and (second) his own programming skills are off-charts-bad.
15:30
So, he returns to the Chieftain so they can get back to the Link and recharge.
Avatar
The tech has been unable to shake off the effects of the disease, and the flesh rot is already beginning to creep in. The medbay is quarantined and all equipment brought to the surface is going to have to undergo the long process of rad-cleaning, which means it will be some days before another attempt can be made safely. In that time, it is very likely there will be risk to the Technicians life and limbs
Avatar
Rogan loads the Chieftain into a quarantined space on the Link and has the current pilot plot an escape route off-planet, mindful of altitude until they are well past the horizon of the Gun. As soon as he can join them, he and the second driver assist with the spike jump to Galatea, so the Technician can get seen in a better medical facility. "Let's let Galatea know we're on our way," he says to the crew Technician on Comms.
17:01
Rogan updates the rest of the crew on what happened, as well as what he found. "Galatea will need to know about what he's been infected with. The Doc can pass you everything that's been learned so far."

Rogan requests a flight path away from Galatea, and takes The Link out. They start their travel to Thea, not expecting any stops, except for fuel.

Rogan asks the Comms Tech to request a meeting with the Colony Manager to discuss the colony project and how we can help.
Avatar
From: Greystar Agent Rogan Tuttle To: Thea Colony Manager Good day! I am Rogan Tuttle, on our way to Thea. I would like to lend my help to your Colony's Project. Let's meet to talk about what you have and what you need. Let me know where to meet you. See you soon! Respectfully, Agent Rogan Tuttle
Avatar
The colony is around the observatory and you’re invited to land as soon as you enter atmosphere. They cannot discuss much beforehand
15:34
(Please don’t double post. I’m aware your thread wasn’t updated. )
Avatar
(Didn't know if you were waiting for me to write it out.)
Avatar
Rogan brings the Link into orbit until he finds the observatory. Finding that, he dives into the atmosphere, leveling off along the route before bringing the ship down for a landing at the colony. On landing, he wears his Icarus Harness, and decides on whether he'll need the Scout Bike to get to his meeting with the Colony Manager.
Avatar
You’re permitted to land right at the very small settlement and the ship can actually land On The ground so you won’t need to jump. The settlement leader is waiting at the foot of the observatory tower with a guard and what looks to be the town engineer
Avatar
Rogan grinned as he got close to the leader, enjoying the feel of the new suit, even if it wasn't necessary here on the planet. "Good day to you! I apologize if I'm dressed for harsher conditions. I wasn't sure if there would be any stops on one of the moons, and wanted to test the new suit. I'm Rogan Tuttle."
Avatar
“Hello Rogan. Welcome to Thea. I understand you’re here to explore and@lend us a hand. There will be a colony here one day and knowing the surroundings will be a massive aid”
Avatar
"Right! I wanted to dig in, not literally, to know what you have and haven't explored. Maybe tell me about something you've seen but haven't gotten to check out yet. And, I know that the moons are also major resources. My ship, the Link-1, has survey sensors if that still needs to be done on the planet or the moons." "How can we best help?" he asks, and then Rogan settles in for the Manager's answer.
Avatar
“You’re free to check the plant and animal records on your own time. I’m interested in the planet itself. The moons arent my concern and if you’re here to survey for a future colony they shouldn’t be yours either. We don’t know much beyond a few kilometer ring of the observatory. The jungle is too dense for ship scanners to point out anything useful. The readings get washed out
Avatar
"Do you have a technical guy? Maybe a programmer I could borrow for a little while. Probably not more than an hour or two. I'd like to see if we can adjust the scanners on my ship to look for specific types of readings. That washing is probably from looking for too much, or isn't filtering effectively."
Avatar
"I can't spare anyone from the work they're doing to figure out how to get this observatory working again. You'd have to do this the old fashioned way, from the ground"
Avatar
Rogan smiles, thankful for the specifics. "Thanks for the details. And, I just wanted to confirm where you have all the animal and plant life you know about noted on-file."
17:12
(Looks like Rogan is going to use the Scout Bike to do most of the traveling here. At least he got the sensors and an extra crew spot on it.) (Question: It sounds like sensors are a Programmer specialty. If so, he needs to send for one -either get up and go in the Link, or have one sent here by shuttle. Which would turn around faster?)
Avatar
(it depends. You could also just use the bioscanner/survey scanner items, which dont need training. Your ship has a locker so those items are available for free) (edited)

Avatar
(Would the bike's scanner be better/faster/make wider sweeps? If not, it's really not much of an add-on for the bike. Anyway, we've got the Scout Bike, so let's start scanning.) Rogan tells him, "We'll start running scans right away."
Avatar
(oh you;'ve got the fitting, then you're fine. D10 when you can)
Avatar
(First roll was a 7.)
Avatar
(alright, which direction out of the camp are we going)
Avatar
(The small island that the observatory is on looks like there would be just a little unscanned area to the East. Let's get that scanned first, with the plan to sweep the South after that.) Rogan heads out in his Assault Armor and current gear with the Doc in his CFU and a combat rifle and 2 A batteries. They head east, with Rogan driving the bike and the Doc scanning. Giving them air support will be the two Drivers and Technician in the Chieftain.
Avatar
The aircraft is unable to see you almost as soon as you leave observatory grounds, and is forced to circle around where they think youj might be. East of the settlement the trees are incredibly dense, and its known that predators hunt in the area. The bioscanner begins chiming, migratory birds are also known to roost in the area- along with the mouse/hummingbird hybrid creature Harper first documented on the initial exploration visit.
Avatar
Rogan starts pumping the Driver with directions through his mind link, which may not allow him to see the bike, but it lets Rogan's broken vision of the Chieftain help direct them to stay nearby.
Avatar
(got it, otherwise what I described is the area you're in now)
Avatar
Rogan tells the Doc, "Be looking for predators. Call them out if you see one on the bioscanner or in living color."
21:26
and he follows up with a call to the Chieftain, "Fire up those railguns if you get a target, alright? But try to miss us, will ya? I'll help guide you in."
Avatar
There is evidence of the passing of these creatures, large footprints in the ground, scattered bone and bits of fur from kills, but otherwise nothing signals a beast is close.
Avatar
(Any tracking we can do of the big beasts? Glad I got the stealth enhancement on the bike. Having a pair of railguns on the Chieftain should help make short work of the Big Bad Wolf.)
Avatar
(Survive/wis)
01:43
(Stealth is for scanners it’s not like a cloaking device )
Avatar
You’re able to find some bigger tracks. They’re not fresh but the ground has not yet begun to reclaim them. You can follow them a good distance and there will hopefully be something else to point you in the right direction
Avatar
(If the bike gets to the end of the tracks, Rogan will direct the Chieftain to fire both railguns into the jungle where the tracks lead.)
Avatar
(Just indiscriminately shooting into the jungle?)
Avatar
(Following a trail, but if the trail stops...)
03:49
(I suppose it would depend on Rogan's confidence in being able to Fade and investigate when the tracks dead-end.)
Avatar
The tracks turn south, toward the coast and go on for kilometers through the dense jungle. Scratch marks on trees, snapped limbs, and dredged roots mark the passage of something truly bulky. Bones that are just a half day old still have spots of red on them as you drive by, scattering local birds who had stopped to pick the carcass. You are closing in. | The chieftain still sees nothing from the air, As evening begins to find its way to you, the tracks end at the coast, heading into the water and vanishing in the lapping waves when they are close to the shore.
Avatar
Rogan just stares at the tracks heading into the water. He puts on the radio, "We're gonna need a big boat..." Shaking his head, pretty happy that they didn't meet the thing, he adds, "That thing was pretty big, so don't be afraid to empty the magazines of those railguns if we see one. But whatever it was dragging may not have been aggressive. That being said, I'm hoping we don't have to make snap judgments, but I'd rather us be alive than sorry." He finishes with the next instructions, "Okay, that was fun. Let's scan some more of the Southern part of this island before we head back in to recharge."
Avatar
(night is approaching fast, we'd have to camp)
15:08
(or at least withdraw for the night if you want to be airlifted out)
Avatar
(Airlift out sounds best. Camping does not sound fun.)
15:15
Rogan has the Doc identify a hard spot of ground for the Chieftain to land and pick up the bike and its passengers. "When we get back to the colony landing pad, we can vote on camping out on future nights."
Avatar
Inside the observatory is where most of the people stay right now, though colony housing is being built- soon farms and defenses will also be put into place, and a small town will begin- but for now camping in its bottom level is where most people go during the night.
Avatar
Rogan volunteers, "I was planning to sleep on the Link, which anyone is welcome to do. But, if you want to sleep under the stars, you are welcome to check out whatever gear you need from the locker. Just let me know. Also, once we start scanning more remote areas, I'd like to know your thoughts about sleeping away from the Observatory at night. I'd vote no, but I'll listen to reason."
Avatar
(your crew would stay on the link, there are people here who live here though at the colony, and they sleep int he bottom floor of the observatory. It doesnt matter where you want to as long as its inside)
Avatar
Rogan nods, "Good choices. Okay, let's make sure the Chieftain and Bike recharge overnight on the generators, and start this again in the morning."
18:32
(Also recharging all the batteries used, for his armor, the scanner, etc.)
Avatar
(yea that would happen overnight)
Avatar
(We're good for sleep, then, and starting again in the morning.)
Avatar
(Probably be a good idea to check the Southern shoreline for inbound destruction by a large animal.)
Avatar
(that's what you want to do on rising? or before resting for the night?)
Avatar
(After breakfast)
Avatar
Night passes, with everyone too tired to do much chatting or merryment . Life on the frontier is difficult. Morning comes, with the cries of birds, the chirp of bugs, and the roar of distant hunting creatures
Avatar
Rogan gets up excited but nervous, which he realizes is the same thing, and says, "Let's get some breakfast and see if we can find out what's making those trails." This time, they will go back to where the water egress was and see if they can find a spot where a big creature came from the water, onto land, and then broke trees going into the jungle. If they don't see anything within a five minute over-flight, they'll set back down at their last landing point and go back to the scanning.
Avatar
After you eat and get into the air, there is no sign this creature has made landfall again right now- at least not anywhere within visibility
Avatar
Rogan has the driver set the Chieftain down at the same spot where they picked up the Bike last evening. Arming up like last time, Rogan and the Doc head off on the Bike, scanning the areas. Rogan maintains the communications for directing the Chieftain.

Steam rises from the ground as you begin moving west. Geothermal activity is registering here and you come across a crater filled with gently steaming water. It does not boil and the bikes scanners do not show any harmful mixtures of elements within the water
13:33

Avatar
(Claiming the hot spring for AYT and Rogan Villas LLC 🤣 )
Avatar
(So, if the planet is largely unexplored, Rogan will update the planet survey with the current findings -technically having that auto-transmit through Rogan's Dataslab, and continue exploration. The next island to explore would be the one directly south of the Observatory. It has some rocky terrain that would be a good landing spot for the Chieftain to release the Bike.)
Avatar
(Alright. We can head down that way. Did you want to roll for some terrain or me?)
Avatar
(I can roll. D10s? I can roll one at a time as we finish a spot, or I can roll a series for them all so you have more time with each. I'll start with the first: 6)
Avatar
(yeah 1 d10, i have to compare it to some different tables so throwing a lot of them up is just slowing things down)
16:52
(plus you might want to stop)
16:53
The second island is rocky, and low foothills where moss clings to misty rocks is your landing zone. Sea birds have nests on the rocky spires, diving into the water to hunt for fish, for smaller sea creatures, and occasionally on the eggs of one another populate the region, never having known the eye or touch of human in their environment
Avatar
Rogan will appreciate the less-scary island, since this is more like the terrain that he'll be enjoying on Suha. "This is what my home on Suha will be like. Can't wait to see it completed."
Avatar
(what direction are we heading?)
Avatar
Clockwise around the island.
Avatar
Midday has you clearing the misty highlands, heading east, into a large plains with a freshwater lake dominating most of the local area. A series of mountains- the source of its water, spread to the south. It is bordered by a large alpine forest to the east
Avatar
Rogan calls for the Chieftain to land so everyone can stop and have lunch and a break from the work. After lunch, we'll keep traveling around the island for the next four-to-five hours until we break for our next meal time. (10)
Avatar
Part of exploring, is indeed, exploring. The crew is curious about the lake, and thinks if they can document some of the animals around it they might be the first to see them.
Avatar
(Oh, thanks. I thought that we were documenting as we were scanning. If we needed to do that back on the Observatory Island, we'll do that after we finish exploring this island.) Rogan and the Doc make a slower circuit around the lake, first to identify dangerous, hidden/camouflaged predators and then off-bike at times for closer identification. The Chieftain will still maintain air cover, but after the first loop, it will be at a higher altitude to get a wider view.
Avatar
(no, discovering a new animal and all that is a big deal. I'm not going to abstract it to a single dice roll. It takes a lot of work to generate all this stuff)
Avatar
(Gotcha. Thanks, again. Man, it would be a shame to take down that Big Ugly, but maybe the Chieftain will see it from its better altitude at some point. Okay..., so we'll do that loop around the lake, like I was saying.)
21:54
(Two loops - and if we spook something, we'll follow. Rogan should be pretty good at tracking when they get off-bike.)
Avatar
(survive/wis, lets get some tracking)
Avatar
(Had to take a re-roll from a 3, but got a 10) (edited)
Avatar
(You do not have any re-roll tokens. It is a 3)
15:28
Tracking anything in this sea of plains grass is an incredibly difficult task, and you're unable to follow any footprints for long. the lake remains a source of interest however, and some of the crew is thinking about doing some fishing.
Avatar
Rogan has anyone with pole-fishing skills make a rod, line, hook, (and reel if they can) out of spare parts and whatever they can find in the Locker, along with nets for others. "If we can catch some live small fish, worms, or shellfish for bait, even better."
Avatar
(Lets get a luck save to see what we get)
Avatar
(11v13. If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.)
Avatar
The net is cast wide, bringing back lots of lake grass and decayed reeds, but the creatures living under the tides seem nimble, and are not easily captured.
Avatar
Not surprised by his fortune, Rogan says, "Let's look for another spot where they are near the shore. We may have scared some of these off. I think the net will work if we keep trying."
Avatar
Thinking about what to use as better bait, the group continues moving along the lakeshore until they find another position a third of a kilometre away, more than enough distance from the alerted fish elsewhere, and enough time for them to forget
Avatar
(Until we catch something, the best baits are starchy and meaty pieces from rations. Throwing bits around where the net will be tossed may be a decent lure.)
Avatar
(Image Credit: Eugenia Hauss) It is not a net that catches your subject, but one of the poles. You race over to it, fighting for nearly fifteen minutes to drag the specimen into shallow waters, where the hook can be removed and it can be placed in a sample tank for catalog and study.
Avatar
Rogan celebrates the catch by giving the person that hooked it a 300 credit bonus. "Nice job! Glad we have something to bring in for our work.... but now, we're going to have to head back to Acastus. There's a meeting starting and I should get there as soon as possible." (It's a 3-day straight jump to Acastus from Thea. Rogan will send a message and update to the Colony Manager about the find and the need to leave.)

I care not for your wagers with other agents, living or deceased." There is a mild annoyance that can be felt coming from the Assistant Director's voice. "If there is something that you would like to say, Agent, out with it. To me it sounds like you are implying that there is an issue with my recollection of events and that I have somehow falsified my report to the Director."

(I'm avoiding the Sanctum thread thought entirely, and only listened to Eisheru's few sentences. Maybe it's my religious teachings reading into his words, but if I had a eulogy to give, and I said the person missed the mark, as a Christian it would point me to sin being a problem.)

(Eisheru is an non-religious Merlon. so that is adding some player biases into the situation.)
16:06
(Missing the mark, while may be a phrase that is used heavily in religions, it is also a statement that says the person fell short of their intended goal. Linya and Daitrij intended to kill the still lady and survive. They did not survive so they fell short of their goal)
Avatar
Rogan shakes his head, denying Eisheru's questions, "That's not it at all, Eisheru. I'm sorry if my words are not clear. I absolutely believe that you are accurate with what you've said, and I'm not talking about your report. I guess, what I'm trying to say is that your words may imply things you don't realize. Daitrij has a very religious following, and when you said that they fell short of the mark, well, that means something besides failing to someone like me that has heard a lot of sermons. That's why I was asking about a speech writer, which I would be horrible at. I'm too slow to put down words, and I miss stuff. But I like to listen. Does that help explain what I'm trying to say?"

"I am still confused to why it is we are having this conversation then. If the report is clear, and my words are accurate, what misunderstanding could there be?" Eisheru stops to do another visual inspection of Rogan. He knows that the Taros in front of him is a telepath so he decides against a mental intrusion, "Also I think you overestimate the power of the late Herald's religious organization. Perhaps it is my own biases, but religions come and go. How many untold thousands of iterations of similar philosophies have burgeoned into a religion? How many thousands more have fallen and been left to the dusts of time? I imagine the Paragon's will likely end up the much the same without their charismatic leader. Either way, the thoughts of a non-government entity such as the Paragons of the Living Flame are none of my concern. If they take issue with my words, let them be the ones to bring it to my attention. They do not need an ambassador." (edited)
Avatar
Rogan surrenders, saddened because he hoped for more empathy. Inwardly, he sighed because religions could say the same thing about governments, but bringing it up now would just seem argumentative. He says simply, "I'm sorry I bothered you, Eisheru. I'll let you get back to business." but he just wants to get back to his room.

Avatar
Rogan shakes his head, no, "Thank you, but I'm really not looking for a therapist. I guess I was hoping that we'd have similar points of view towards Linya and Daitrij, but it's okay that we don't have that."

"I am still uncertain what it is you are trying to say and what you were looking for out of this conversation. Linya was an agent I respected. The Herald a worthy political adversary with whom I worked with several times in the past. You didn't ask for my thoughts on them as people, you only made some vague statements about knowing them. So please excuse any confusion that I may have, you have yet to be very concrete with the direction of this conversation." "Also please remember that strong emotional connections are not something I am capable of due to the Liberation. Do I wish that Agent Tychos and Herald Sakharov were still alive? Of course. Am I distraught that they died during a dangerous encounter with an eaten goddess who had manifested herself in real-space? No. I am honestly surprised that more of us did not perish to her blade." (edited)
Avatar
"How am I supposed to know what to look for out of this?" Rogan responds with layers of frustration and grief. He tries, mostly successfully, to lower his voice despite what's behind it, "I'd say maybe I do need some therapy, but I'm afraid the therapist would be dead within a month of meeting me! Heck, I thought I was dead three different times the first week I started." Taking a breath, he calms down enough to continue, "I'm going to you, someone I've only barely met, knowing that you've had the Liberation, but one of few that worked with them both. And I can't explain why. Validation of my feelings for them, maybe? Maybe I'd just be best off getting back to work. At least exploring Thea only has a huge sea monster that hunts on land. I wonder if I could get giant knockout-dart pellets for my gravflyer's railguns." he switches topics, ready to move on.

"Look, Mr. Tuttle... Rogan... It's clear to me you are struggling with the loss of two of your friends. However short or long the friendship is of little consequence. What I can say is that Life, like all things, comes and goes. We are here for a brief moment in time before we are gone once again. Some have longer moments, others? Shorter ones. While it is a tragedy that they are gone, their memory lives on as long as you keep them in your thoughts. Some days it will be easy. Others will be much harder to accept that they are gone. So whatever you need to do to come to terms with that acceptance is a good idea. If that means diving into work, so be it. If that means solitude and meditation, that works also. Either way that is a question that you, and only you will be able to answer for yourself." Eisheru looks down at the dataslab and reaches for the door into the next meeting room, "I am afraid I must cut this conversation short, but again if you need to speak at greater length we can do so back in Acastus. Be well, Agent."

Rogan just nods once to Eisheru, wishing it was that easy. He answers back, "You, too, Eisheru. Be well."

I'd like to hire a scientist and a technician (unless I would need two scientists, which would be fine) to start that work on Suha. Avatar
After hiring two new scientists and a technician on Acastus, Rogan is wanting to push for more exploration on Thea. The last thing he wants to do is think about Linya, her will, and the Esperanza because that would prove that he accepted her death. 'Nope,' he thought, 'she would want me to figure out a way to knockout that big carnivore instead of killing it. I bet people smarter than me could think up how to turn one of the Chieftain's railguns into a giant flop rifle for giant critters. Maybe they just make the shells smaller and fill em with a knockout gas or a whale of a tranquilizer.' Sending the scientific team back to Suha on a shuttle with their new mission, he meets back up with the exploration crew and flies in to Thea. As they finish the jump, Rogan sends a message to the Colony Manager, letting him know that they would be picking up where they left off on the small island south of the Observatory.
Avatar
the island does not seem to have changed at all, and you can still see some of the track marks and landing scrapes from when your ship was here last.
Avatar
Rogan tells the group, adding a little extra excitement emotion through his mind-connection with the Driver of the Chieftain, "Alrighty! Let's find some more new life out here. On the ground, we'll take it slower so the bike doesn't scare off what we're looking for. Don't get bored up on the Chieftain. Y'all can take turns using the binoculars, because whoever's drivin' needs to be ready to cover us if the Big Bad Amphibian comes out to play. We'll finish off the circuit of this island first." and with that, Rogan and the Doc start a start-and-stop scanning of the eastern side of the island. (4 on the d10)
Avatar
The eastern side is rocky and tide lashed. Most of the storms that come ashore run into the breakwaters here. Tide pools are abundant, as are sand dunes anchored in place by very long fronds of grass. Sea birds and small crustaceans nest here in large numbers.
Avatar
Switching to walking to check out the tidal pools, Rogan asks the Doc to scan for unidentified sea-life forms that would be fairly easy to capture in the tidal pools.

Rogan calls out, "Hey! We got some shellfish!" with excitement as he turns them back a good distance with their catch, having the Chieftain land on a hard spot a-ways back along their path so they don't disturb the tidal pools with the grav flyer landing nearby. They transfer the critters to the lab and then resume checking out the pools before moving on to the next sector.
Avatar
(There’s other stuff in them, depending on how through you want to be
Avatar
(Definitely want to take advantage of our captive audience in the pools. We're not trying to strip them clean. Just wanting to do a good job of finding the native lifeforms for documentation. So, we'll take another crack at capturing others, while making sure the Chieftain isn't more than a few seconds away in case the BBAmphibian shows up hungry.)
Avatar
The creature in the water seems like it’s not coming today, and you’re able to take some samples along with a few sea grasses and other small simple creatures from the pools. Youll have a veritable aquarium soon

Avatar
Rogan and the team document the location of these pools and decide when they have a good sampling of the creatures they can catch. (Is this a good point to move to the next area, or is there sufficient trapping grounds to try to get more?)
Avatar
(We can move on)
Avatar
Rogan and the Doc saddle up on the Scout Bike as the Chieftain takes to the air again. They continue following the clockwise circuit of the eastern side of the island. (6 on d10)
Avatar
This seems to be the last unmapped region of the island. The tide pools give away to a dune , followed by a light inland forest of tall trees, with broad leaves. Nuts and other small cones litter the forest floor, but otherwise there is not much complex life living within the forest at the moment. No doubt the trees offer a natural windbreak for the legion of nesting birds you saw on the other side of the island during your initial exploration but the weather is good, and none are sheltering here right now.
Avatar
(If any of the trees look unique, we'll gather some nuts and cones for study. If there are Native ground-nesting or flightless fowl in the forested area, we will hunt off the bike and see if we can capture one with the handy-dandy net. If not, and there's nothing else unique to bring back, we'll document all we've found on the island and head out -to sleep if it's late, or to the small island to the South-south-east.)
16:06
"Hang on, Doc! We're gonna be scanning this quickly." Rogan takes the Doc on a fun ride over the dunes, enjoying the chance to open up the bike and ride waves of sand. Once they scour the dunes, they follow the tree line, slowing down again as they look for Native life.
Avatar
The birds arent nesting in the woods right now, so there is nothing to find here, but the dropped nuts are from native trees, and might be worth studying elsewhere
Avatar
Rogan and the Doc stop every so often near Native plants and trees, gathering nuts/seeds/cones along with small seedlings that can be transplanted by hand. Rogan laughs, seeing the Scout Bike turned into a Garden Center. He called to the Chieftain. "Better come down before someone accidently waters us."
03:25
(Ready to move to the next island? We'll stop for the night and return to the Link at the Observatory when we are done for the day.)
Avatar
(I think this is a good stopping point as is for what you can realistically cover in a day. This was a lot of ground
Avatar
(Cool, thanks. Thought it might be.) Loaded up, the Chieftain flies back to the Observatory and the Link to get a good dinner and allow everyone and everything to recharge. As he prepares to transfer everything from the Chieftain, he realizes that he needs a shipboard Lab for these kind of missions, but with the money situation as it is, they'll just have to make due.
Avatar
The observatory has a lab here, and on the native world of these creatures this seems to be a sensible place to keep them for the moment.

Rogan plans out the next island for their exploration. They will continue the standard process of dropping the Doc and Rogan with the bike to scan the island. They'll be circling the mountains clockwise around the island.
Avatar
You're dropped near a cove, that was probably once open to the water itself, now cut off by a thin stretch of land. It is sandy, and this side of the island seems to be where any sediment picked up from passing storms is deposited. Any sort of harbor here would need to be dredged often. You can see fish in the clear water, trapped inside this bay and cut off from the open ocean- forced to endure the whims of the sun and the rains for how much water they get to swim in.
Avatar
Rogan adjusts his loadout before exiting the Chieftain, leaving the black slab in the grav-flyer's smugglers hold so he can keep both blade and grenade. He appreciates the landing spot, thinking out loud, "Looks like a nice fishin' hole. Better get out the sign for 'Gone Fishin' and put it on the bike. Gonna need the Chieftain in the air, though. Never know when BBA will stop by."
Avatar
They'll keep circling. No one is prepared to tangle with it right now, unless the intent is killing it. The mountains are ringed by birds, but are far distant right now and this fishing cove may yield valuable information
Avatar
(Right now, the only thing we can do is put shells and lasers in it. Preference would be scaring it off, but not at the risk of the crew.)
16:23
Rogan gets out the net and poles for catching what we can. He hopes to re-stock their aquarium again. Once they catch some bait fish, they'll use them for catching bigger fish or carnivores. "This one may be worth staying at all day. We can take turns flying the Chieftain so everyone gets a turn."
16:25
(Instead of maintaining flight, could the craft be readied on the ground and get 100 meters altitude quickly for a clean firing solution?)

Rogan closes it up for transport with a rope, leaving some open space for it to get water flow, but not enough to clam-p down on anyone. With help, load it into the Chieftain aquarium. After it is safely stored, it's back to fishing/hunting in this lovely large pool.
Avatar
The thrashing of the clam seems to have startled any life in this area. They won’t return for some time
Avatar
Seeing that the hunting has been used up, Rogan restarts the exploration clockwise around the smallest island. He announces to the crew, "Here's hoping we can continue our good luck. Everyone stay sharp."

Avatar
(I was thinking that Rogan was primarily scouting the land and taking samples of the lifeforms unique to Thea to prep the planet for colonization. If there's only one of those BBA, then it may not encounter them, since its hunting grounds are all over the planet, and it's hidden by the water.) (Also, I don't know how you want to manage the weapon testing. Do you want Rogan to directly oversee all or just parts of it? If all of it, there's no reason to be on Thea any longer until we determine success or permanent failure. If parts, then he would either do the parts on Thea using the Workshops in the Link and Chieftain, using the railgun already installed on the Chieftain. Please let me know however you'd like that to be. Thanks!)
Avatar
(I thought we already shot that down as far as there’s no way to non lethally shoot hypersonic slugs of dense metal at something )
Avatar
(I had asked about potential adjustments to the weapon and slugs, but I'll count it as shot down. So, that means another type of heavy weapon is needed to be refined, if it's reasonably-possible at all. Maybe grenade launchers loaded with sleeping gas grenades [which probably need to be researched].)
17:03
(Or grenade launchers with tranquilizer darts fitted instead of grenades [which probably need to be researched].)
Avatar
(and my retort to both of those was I don't want items like that into the game right now because we have other stunning/non lethal options available. As far as if the BBA is unique, a creature its size is the absolute top of the chain, so if not the only one, it is certainly one of a small number) (edited)

From: Rogan. To: Eisheru/Aiya tech. CC'D: Svenka Vilnovha. Subject: Mikas and Thea Have not completed survey of Thea, but have run into a dangerous yet native creature that is large and carnivorous enough to be a problem for the colony. I am shifting from Thea to Mikas to continue Agent Harper’s work with the locals there in hopes of solving at least Thea’s large creature issues through experience with the dangerous creatures coming through the Gate on Mikas. I plan to utilize my ships and vehicles to dig out and move the Gate, which could help that planet. I am currently en route to Acastus for additional drivers, a technician, and a programmer. I will invest my current funds for these. Respectfully, Rogan Tuttle
Avatar
The gate cannot be moved from the surface of the planet, based on Agent Harper's report. Anything that would have engines powerful enough would also not be able to break atmosphere again on its own. The locals must be equipped to handle what comes out of it, or the gate must be destroyed.

(And I had thought the reason for being there anyway was just learning how they hunt big monsters rather than solving their problems but I’ll do whatever)

Rogan leads his three ships in the Esperanza (crew complements are already on the sheet), leaving the Harbinger in orbit while the two others overfly (at 2,000 m) the major towns. They also identify but give a wide berth to the Hell Gate, just to be safe while getting a better feel for the landscape. Rogan contacts the leader(s) at the town nearest the Gate, and asks to have a talk. He also asks for details on the last creature to pass through the gate (how recently, and of what type) as well as the frequency of creatures passage through the Gate. (edited)
Avatar
Last Hope is closest to the gate. Their leaders do not have a way to get messages into space, and approaching the settlement somehow you expect will be half the challenge- though Harper coming here before you will have lessened their shock at seeing a spacecraft.
Avatar
Esperanza, with the Link flying as wing-ship, set down outside Last Hope, dropping off Rogan on the Scout Bike. Rogan confirms his telepathic connection to the Driver he's worked with before he speeds off. Once he's away, the ships fly upward, getting almost 90km above the ground before they level off. Rogan rides in toward the fort, watching for their greeting team to meet him.
Avatar
The doors open, each of them large enough to permit a walker to enter and exit. A phalanx of ten motorbikes and a large grav truck emerge. Their riders have weapons shouldered, and they're wary
Avatar
Rogan slows to a stop and waves. He's geared out (per sheet), with Assault Suit and rifle. When they get close, he tells them, "I'm Greystar Agent Rogan Tuttle. I'd like to talk to your leadership if y'all can arrange that."
Avatar
The bikes move into a position surrounding you, and signal for you to follow them into the city. Being surrounded, there is not much choice- while the grav vehicle provides overwatch. It is fitted with several large barbed harpoons on long chains
Avatar
He calls to the closest one as he follows them in, "Thanks for the escort! I heard your critters are big enough to swallow my bike whole."
Avatar
They can. Your bike, all these bikes. Greystar has taken some notice in our planet. Why are you here?
18:47
The message is sent to you, rather than shouted over the engine noise
Avatar
Right to the point. I like it. he answers back with his grin, looking around for who sent the message. I'm here to see about helping connect your planet's peoples and work with your cities to iron out a way to make sure the gate doesn't hold you back.
Avatar
Destroyed or equipped to handle the danger, it hardly matters to me, so long as something changes You're not sure who on the truck is sending the message, other than it must be someone in the actual cab. Into the city made from monster bones and reinforced with metals, you're taken down the main boulevard to what appears to be a holdfast building- a last ditch for people to run to in the event something breaches the walls. The people here are dour, used to a hard life of fighting and struggling to survive.
Avatar
Rogan rides up near the entrance and dismounts from the bike. He waits at the door expecting an escort, or for the motorized group to resume their duties.
Avatar
With so many guards around, a personal escort isn't assigned to you, butit hardly matters as the three members of the ruling caste here exit the holdfast, stepping down the stairs made of filed bone to make their way to the ramp of your vehicle. Discussions, it seems, will be happening here
Avatar
Rogan smiles at the Three, giving a short bow of his head in greeting. He says, "Thank you for having me. I'm Greystar Agent Rogan Tuttle, and I'd like to see what we can do to help your planet thrive. One of the things I'd like to do is bring down my ships to get a closer look at the Gate, and hopefully a more distant look at a monster or two," he says, pausing for a moment. "But I'm not here just for curiosity," he tells them. "I'd like to see if there's a way to get into the Gate's controls. It would be great to be able to close and open the Gate on command, instead of it being open all the time. Hopefully, anyway. If not, I'd like to bring leaders from your other cities together to meet and talk. Maybe sharing experiences and tactics is what this planet needs."

“Well, if it can’t be controlled, then it sounds like destroying it is the only option left. Seems strange that something that is switched On can’t be switched Off, though.” He pauses again, this time for questions to pop into his head. “Once the Gate’s shut off, there’s still the matter of the monsters that are still loose. Have you had experience with creatures coming out of the water nearby?”
Avatar
“You’re free to talk to the laws of the universe that control physics and gravity and ask them why it didn’t deactivate when it crashed into the surface. Your questions are accomplishing nothing. As for the monsters Most of them leave for the better hunting grounds of the western continents once they get through the gate. Any wanderers or those that don’t leave end up getting taken care of by us.
Avatar
Rogan laughs at the idea of talking to those Laws, but acknowledges the statement of accomplishing nothing with a nod. He takes in the extra details that this town is not as hard hit by the creatures as on the Western Continents. “Well then. Let’s get something accomplished, then. Where can I land three ships?”
Avatar
“The desert outside the city is flat. You can find a place there. We don’t have anything that would need the space”
Avatar
Rogan nods before saying, “Thanks. Do you have someone good at shooting that you could give up to go out with me? Rogan calls down the ships to bring out the Chieftain and rearrange crews. He places the scientists and a Tech in the Lab on the Harbinger where they can work in the Lab and Workshop there. He'll load the Chieftain [armed with both railguns again] with Rogan, a Driver, a Tech, and the Programmer. Once loaded, the ships will maintain that 90km placement over the Chieftain. "Let's watch for fire, in case the defenses on the Gate are still active. And everyone watch for monsters. Those might be able to fire from long range, so don't assume ground critters are not a threat," he puts over comms before lifting off and making sure the others take their high-altitude positions. Since there is no reason to take chances, he brings the Chieftain to an altitude of 7 km (inside the 8km max railgun range) on its way to the Gate. (Edit add) Rogan calls to the Harbinger, "If you need to get closer for sciencey study, bring the ship down. But don't get lower than 2 kilometers above the Chieftain unless I ask you to set down, copy?" (edited)
Avatar
(Its not 8km in the sky it can be fired from, its it can be fired 8km linearly ahead of you)
Avatar
(Thanks! We'll adjust to a low-ish height once we get there. The altitude is more for safety on the trip, and to spot threats so they can be avoided or targeted as needed.)
Avatar
(okay, what position is Rogan taking inside the chieftain so we know who's modifiers should count for what?)

(Edited: Rogan Driver would be Pilot & Nose-gunner if that works. Driver Rogan would be gunner 2 [and co-pilot], Technician on the Comms, with Programmer ready to assist on Comms) (edited)

(Alright. We don’t have a targeting board installed so the pilot can shoot one gun and youd have to fire the other. )
22:20
The chieftain flies off with everyone in their places , they wait for any last minute orders before closing into maximum rail gun range
Avatar
(No changes)

The chieftain's heads up display chimes once, turning from the red of weapons being locked down, to weapons free. The massive gateway is ahead rising from its position half buried in the desert bowl. Dust billows around it from the crackling energies of the portal, and the haze of purple blue mist between its round arch and the ground gently bubbles. In more peaceful times something like this would have allowed mass transit to take place between connected systems. Those days, and the days of getting millions of tons between worlds quickly on system slowboats are long gone- consigned to an age humanity may never reach again. The crew waits for you to make the first moves
Avatar
Rogan sets the targeting for the railgun to aim at the arch. But then reconsiders. He calls to the scientists on the Harbinger, "How close would you need to be to get us some more detailed analysis of the Gate. I'd be especially interested in learning if there is a ring around it that could be entered like a space station, generally safely. Could you also do some research to make a calculated guess as to how these things were managed once they were put into place?"
Avatar
"Belay that last. Just confirm the best target areas for our railguns."
Avatar
They would need to comply with the first order you told them to belay to fulfill your second. “I can’t work in these conditions” the pilot says, and the comms officers both agree. “We are turning around. Talk to the locals and figure out what the hell you’re doing and maybe we can try again. I’m not going to get shot out of the sky for this or for you”
Avatar
Rogan tells the crew in the Chieftain, "Hold on, before you start saying we're going to get shot out of the sky. I wasn't going to fire yet, but I didn't want to come this close without giving the scientists a chance to confirm whether the guns would have an effect. Besides, we're the best chance for learning more about this gate, since we've got the best lab and people available." "Just because I'm not destroying the Gate now doesn't mean I will be taking unnecessary risks. Have we been fired on? No. At this point, we can't confirm anything besides the monsters here are a danger to us. Since we're already here, I don't want to waste the opportunity to gather what we information we can." "Also, turning around isn't going to help. We need to talk to the people from the other continent. After we do some investigating here, we'll head to OcyenHoryn. Then to Kaijadomo. At that point, we'll be able to make an informed decision on whether the Gate needs to be destroyed." "What I've done so far has been to minimize your risk. Landing by myself. Flying here at high altitude. Even now, at maximum range, with nobody firing on us or attacking, with two other ships on lookout." (edited)
Avatar
He begins banking the craft away from the gate, toward Last Hope once again. "We're not doing advanced research like this on the fly. It's clear you haven't prepared at all, and we're not going to die for it"
Avatar
Rogan stays calm, despite the anger starting to flare. He states, in a direct comms link to the pilot, "You've taken over steerage on this vessel despite no immediate or imminent threat. I understand the concern you have, and now that we're out of our weapons' range of the Gate, you'll take us to OcyenHoryn, not Last Hope." Continuing with the direct comms to the pilot, "If you would like me to tell you about the research vessel and scientists aboard that vessel that are currently with us, I would be glad to. However, I want you to explain why you feel getting any closer than maximum railgun range is a death sentence." (edited)
Avatar
He says nothing , piloting the chieftain on a new course to OcyenHoryn instead. You cannot see his face behind the glare goggles or the full atmosphere mask , but you can sense his frustration and that of the crew
Avatar
Rogan accepts their feelings of frustration, although they've only been on Mikas for about a day. He knows that just blowing the Gate up would be the simple, and probably safe thing to do. However, he also realizes his initial decision was premature, based only on the people nearest the Gate. Once the last two cities have been contacted, he'll feel better about what they have to offer to give him reason not to destroy the Gate.
Avatar
The flight is quiet. The crew does their work passing only the necessities of flying to one another over the communal wired headset system inside the Chieftain. OcyenHoryn is a large settlement built predictably near the coast. They've had no shortage of their own troubles here and the settlement reminds you more of a coastal fortress than a place where people can live comfortably. Monster bones have been fashioned into a sea of spikes around the foundations of the holdfast city and extend all the way down the cliffs to the ocean below. The city doesn't have gates or easy ways in or out. You can see trapdoors in the upper reaches of the wall where complex systems of pullies bring things up and down from the plains around the city, or down to the beach beyond the sea of razor'ed bones.
Avatar
Rogan asks the Comms Tech to attempt to contact the locals here, reminding the Driver that the fort's communications equipment is short-ranged. Since they may not be able to setup a landing spot, he prepares for a drop-in visit. He gets his gear ready (sheet updated), including switching out Type B cells for As along with wearing his Icarus Harness with an A-cell plugged in for his jump.
Avatar
He points to his headset, and then to you, signaling a transmission is waiting. It looks like he's been able to get ahold of someone on the ground. You can hear the crackling on the line, someone is either talking and is very faint, or they're waiting for you to say something first. The connection light flashes amber, showing something is connected but the signal is weak\
Avatar
Rogan has the Comms Tech relay the message by text while he transmits audio: This is Greystar craft Alliance Chieftain and Agent Rogan Tuttle. I am requesting permission to come inside OcyenHoryn. I am requesting a meeting with the city leaders to discuss the Gate and future plans. Over.
Avatar
Land on the western plains, 500m from the city, and wait. You will be attended shortly
18:25
the return message comes in three times, signaling some sort of ground station having a truly laborious time trying to get a message out
Avatar
Nodding, Rogan directs the pilot to that general area. As he no longer appears to need to jump, he switches back into his Assault Suit and his loadout for that. He lets the crew know to stay on alert for tremors and be ready to get airborne any moment. ... Once they land, Rogan steps outside to wait. Sending to the crew, "Stay on high patrol after I'm in their hands. I'll call for pickup or air support, depending on what happens. Keep an eye out for trouble."
Avatar
A hatch has opened on the western wall of the settlement. Twenty soldiers and someone in the middle of their group that looks to be charged with actually speaking to you are making their way down through the tangled mess of obstacles and natural defenses. Their armor is reinforced with monster parts such as bone. Metal is rare. Most of them have mag weapons, or things resembling them that owe more to a large compound crossbow.
Avatar
Rogan waits calmly, but talks to the Chieftain crew in his mic, "Wait til we're inside to take off, unless trouble rears its ugly head. If that happens, just lift off and fly backwards, laying as much metal into the critter as you can while you leave."
Avatar
They don't see anything on scanners or anything with their eyes that would signify something is close. Steam and a creak of metal signifies the platform has come to a halt. The soldiers disembark first, weapons moving fluidly as they survey the surrounding area.
Avatar
Rogan waves, taking a couple of steps toward them, expecting to be waved over the rest of the way once they've determined the coast is clear.
Avatar
You're wave forward into the protective ring of armored soldiers after a moment and they confirm neither you nor the environment has hostile intent.
Avatar
Rogan doesn't dawdle. He knows that any time spent in the open is dangerous for these people as well as his crew and himself. He jogs into the ring and follows them back to the hatch.
Avatar
"Alright Greystar. You're here" the cheiftain says from within his ring of security. "What do you want? You're a long way from home"
Avatar
"First, I want to find out more about your city, and your world as you see it. But then, I'm hoping that we can figure out the best way to improve the way of life on your world. So, first. Can you tell me about how your city started out, and how much has changed since the Gate's creatures started attacking?"
Avatar
"Like everything else on this planet we were a community here since the Second Wave of Exploration. Things here weren't different than they were in any of the other colonies from that time. Things were pretty standard and were built that way. We were blessed with a jump gate however and there was some hope we would become a link in the transportation network from the frontier to the core. We enjoyed a decade of prosperity here as the gate did just that, and then The Scream happened. The teleportation choir killed themselves in the mass hysteria that occurred. The Gate's course drifted and it hit the atmosphere. We thought the impact with the ground that buried half of it would have turned it off, but the materials are hyper dense and starship grade. Enough of the bits are still working I guess, and the impact must have scrambled its tuning to open up...wherever these things come from. As for how things changed, you've seen are city and are riding this elevator platform. I think that speaks for itself"
Avatar
Rogan nods, taking in some of the details he wasn't familiar with. He then agrees, "It does speak for itself. I do have to ask, have you learned any special ways of combating these monsters? Since you're so near the water, do you know of ways of incapacitating amphibian creatures, or detecting them before they can attack?"
Avatar
'The ground shakes, the water moves back several meters. THere's little things you start to notice when something that large is about to break the surface of the water. The shallows are good to watch too. If you don't see the little critters, there is a reason they've gone somewhere. We kill them the way humans always kill things. Harpoons, cannons, the biggest weaponry we can get our hands on. There's no reason to incapacitate anything, just to kill. "
21:55
"these things can't be corralled , and they think we're food. "
Avatar
Rogan nods again, assuming the worst. He pulls his Field Radio and three A-cell batteries from his backpack and hands them to the chieftain, "Sounds pretty clear to me so far. That is a radio and batteries for it. It should give us a way to talk from farther away than your current radio lets you. I'm going to visit Kaijadomo to confirm that they do not have a way to contain the creatures or the Gate. Is there anyone there I should ask for, or anything you'd like passed along?"
Avatar
"I don't know anyone from that settlement. Long distance overland travel is too dangerous for us to bother sending anyone up that way." (FYI the field radio and the fact you're flying the width of a continent away has them massively out of range of being able to contact you.)
22:14
(Really doesn't do anything for them)
Avatar
(Was hoping it would improve the range and their radio set seemed in pretty bad shape.)

Avatar
(Field Radio: On worlds too primitive to have a comm grid, adventurers often fall back on these head-set-mounted field radios. A single type A cell powers them for months of use. Urban or rugged terrain limits their range to about two kilometers, while flat plains give a maximum range of thir-ty kilometers. Someone with at least Program-0 skill can use the radio’s shortwave functionality to communicate with a prepared target at conti-nental distances if given ten minutes for tuning.

(It’s from you to them though. Not them with the whole other planet is what I’m saying. They don’t have the skills)

(I don’t know what you’re trying to say)
Avatar
(Rogan would like to setup field radios with shortwave at Kaijadomo, OcyenHoryn, and at Wrogen Pass to help them start talking and at least have a chance to learn about each other during down times.)
Avatar
(okay, i get what you're saying. We have one city done then for i guess as long as the batteries last)
Avatar
(Back to what is going to be a short conversation.) Rogan nods at their alone-ness on this planet. He says, "I understand that you've all been separated since shortly after the Gate fell. I take it that your people would be best off with the Gate dead and some help clearing the monsters from the world, then?"
Avatar
"Nothing like the life we knew before The Scream can come back to this world while the gate and the things coming out of it exist. "
Avatar
"Alright then," Rogan says, determined to fix that problem, "I better get over to Kaijadomo and talk with them as soon as possible. It has been good to meet you. Mind if I call my craft down for a somewhat windy and noisy pickup?"
Avatar
The platform reversed direction and brings you back out to the plans before the delegation withdraws back to the city
Avatar
Rogan makes sure the radio is setup, and then calls the Chieftain back for a quick pickup, and flight to Kaijadomo. (Edit add on: I'm not sure how long we've been on-planet so far, including the time needed for the over-flight of the cities and Gate when we arrived. If necessary, the trip to Kaijadomo can wait on getting the Chieftain onboard the Link to recharge and restock.) (edited)
Avatar
(We're fine to proceed)
14:36
The flight to Kaijadomo spends its first our in absolute silence. The crew is still simmering about things it seems, and you think you're about to approach the elephant in the room when the console begins chiming with a biological detection on the plains below, beyond visual range
Avatar
Rogan starts calling out instructions. First, to the Comms Tech, "Tell the Harbinger to get their scientists in the Lab. We may have a specimen to look at." Next, to the pilot, "I have Number 2. Nobody fire until we know what we're facing. But if it's a monster and nobody else is around, we'll light it up." "Just to be extra careful, get outside maximum weapons range and fly towards it. We'll fire once we get into range and peel off and away. Worst case, you turn us backwards and we keep firing. Best case, we repeat that as safe as can be. Any questions before we engage?"
Avatar
They don’t seem to have any until combat begins. They’re not sure about the monster below or it’s capabilities. It resembles a jellyfish but it walks on centipede like legs. Fronds of cilia like hair ripple across its domed head and body , gently crackling with energy
Avatar
Rogan realizes that they have another information resource, so he tells the Programmer, "Can you get one of our field radios switched over to the short wave. Let's see if we can raise OcyenHoryn. If they know something about this critter, it might save us some rounds." He asks the Comms Tech to get ahold of the scientists on the Harbinger to see if they can find anything about jellyfish to locate their brain or heart, or whatever they might have to target. "I'm pretty sure that head and body are the best targets. But I'd like to know a little more."
Avatar
They have no idea what this creature might be and their head researcher reminds you that just because they are scientists doesn't mean they can just look at a thing and know all about it. Your best bet is Ocyeanhoryn and the programmer will have to spend the next ten minutes trying to get a connection together so you can communicate with them.
Avatar
Rogan tells the Programmer to go ahead and get that going. "Once the Comms are setup on that one, go ahead and get a third Radio setup the same way. No sense doing them slowly, and this way we can test to make sure they work together." He then replies back to the head researcher, "You're right, I can't expect you to tell me what you don't know. Could you tell me what a giant-sized jellyfish would be like in its environment? For instance, I know they don't have brains or hearts, so that could make killing this thing more like shredding it with fire."
Avatar
The bulb of the body on a conventional jellyfish is where the important bits seem to be. They're not sure if it applies to this creature or not
Avatar
Nodding his head despite their inability to see him, Rogan replies back, "Thanks! That was what I was going to guess. For now, I'm hoping to get you some more notes from the folks at OcyenHoryn to connect with this particular critter. We'll see what they have to say and go from there. If we can take this one out, you'll have a specimen to get more details from." To the pilot, he confirms what he was just saying, "We'll stay out of range until after we've heard from OcyenHoryn." To the Programmer, "As soon as you have them, ask or send this:" This is Rogan Tuttle. We have spotted a creature that resembles a jellyfish but walks on centipede-like legs. Something that looks like hair covers its body and the hair looks like it's loaded with energy. Have you seen anything like this before? If you have seen energy-overloaded monsters, what effective range have they had for energy discharges? Thank you in advance for your notes.
Avatar
They have not seen an aberration like this one before, at least not from any hunters who survived, so they have no information for you
Avatar
Rogan feels less than thrilled with that answer, but considers it moot since all have seemed to be deadly. And this one looks like it would be if it gets close enough to release that energy. He alerts the Chieftain crew to prepare to begin their plan of action. He specifically asks the pilot to line up for their attack run. They can both fire when the craft enters the rail-guns' range. He'll call 'fire'. "Ready when you are," he says to the pilot.
Avatar
(don't forget the -2 if we're firing right at 8km, as we're at long range)

Avatar
Just before they reach firing range, Rogan quickly reminds the pilot, "Aim center mass of the bulb of the body... and... Fire!"
Avatar
(just need attack results when you have time to roll them)
16:28
(pilot would be d20+1 between his modifiers and then the long range penalty. You'd fire your own with your normal modifiers, at a -2 penalty for long range)
Avatar
(5 for me, I'll roll damage if you say that hits) (19/17 for the Pilot)
Avatar
(Pilot hits, you do not)
Avatar
Rogan continues to talk through the tactic as he watches the Pilot's shells hit home but his own fired well above the creature, "and pull around for another shot. No need for a full circle, and it'll slightly change our angle. I'll watch the screen for any movement from the creature."
17:14
(-100 credits for 2 rounds of fire) (edited)
Avatar
The jellyfish recoils from the hit. You've wounded it, and it is angry. The static electricity that resides on its waxy skin crackles and intensifies into a halo of energy around it. A bolt crackles outwards tearing through the sky like a spear of yellow lightning. It strikes the Chieftain near the wing root (25/19, its not a heavy weapon so subtracting armor has this at 25/11 on the plane)
Avatar
(At 8km away, Rogan will look for hills or forested area to give the Chieftain cover behind which they can fly low while they make their attempt at escape. There's no second attack run here.)
Avatar
(Pilot/dex, we're in combat so a skill check is going to be the main action of either you or the pilot)
Avatar
(10 for Rogan)
Avatar
The bolt fires again and misses as you invert and turn into a steep dive. The wing wobbles but holds as you get in amid the cover on the ground, shielded from direct line of sight by the hills and rocky outcrops around you
Avatar
Rogan maintains the break in vision by staying low. He asks the Comms Tech to have the other ships confirm the creatures location and speed to help him stay hidden and change direction.
Avatar
It seems to be very slow. You should not have a problem out pacing it in your aircraft. Going back in for another attack run should be the only reason it’s able to fire at you again (edited)
Avatar
Rogan sets the Esperanza to maintain watch on this creature while the Chieftain extends the distance and is recovered and repaired onboard the Harbinger. He passes along the details of the quick battle to the scientists so that they can record it for Greystar documentation and to forward that same information to OcyenHoryn. He sends a message to all crews, "This creature has an extremely long range and packs as big punch. We'll repair the Chieftain onboard the Harbinger, and monitor the creature with the Esperanza until indirect fire can be brought to bear against it. Which means that we're heading back on course to Kaijadomo to finish talking to the settlements. Rogan out."
Avatar
(That little, but potentially deadly encounter puts a big question-mark on the potential defenses that the Gate will/could have. Before firing on the Gate, we will be finding cover. If there's no cover, we're going to have to find and utilize heavy weapons that can be remotely-guided, like missiles or a drone.)
Avatar
(ECM has made remotely guided missiles a thing that doesn't exist in the setting both in Iron Stars and the base Stars Without Number Kevin Crawford setting. ECM also scrambles drones that drift to within its protective field. Starships and other large space infrastructure have it naturally due to their heavy reliance on computer systems. It is pervasive as well as most TL 3+ cities have it) (edited)
14:58
(Its why we still have face to face battles rather than shooting salvos of guided missiles at each other from thousands of kilometres away)
Avatar
(That leaves long range artillery as the primary indirect fire option. I know that artillery was mentioned being used on Mikas, but Rogan will need to talk to locals to find out about coordinating strikes. At least it appears safe enough to monitor the Jelly-pede from a distance until something can be worked out. -and he has time during the trip to Kaijadomo.) (edited)

(Heading to Kaijadomo)
17:09
Following the repairs, Rogan brings the Chieftain into the atmosphere with the same crew, and continues their planned travel to Kaijadomo. He asks the Comms Tech to open communications with them as soon as they can be reached. Basically, he'll repeat the previous greeting. This is Greystar craft Alliance Chieftain and Agent Rogan Tuttle. I am requesting permission to come inside Kaijadomo. I am requesting a meeting with the city leaders to discuss the Gate and future plans. Over.
Avatar
The city messages back that you're permitted to land outside the walls and they will send a delegation out to meet with you.
Avatar
After they confirm that there is no monster activity nearby, Rogan directs the pilot to land facing parallel to the wall. Rogan steps out and watches for the delegation, while having the Harbinger and Link maintain their overhead watch for danger.
Avatar
Another troop of dust covered security emerges from the main city gates, protecting someone in clothes less suited for travel over the hostile environment. There is no sign of monsters nearby but their protective posture is still high.
Avatar
As they get closer, Rogan waves and walks toward them. He'll follow their instructions and start greeting the leader when they are close enough.
Avatar
"Greystar, welcome to our city" he says after conferring with his security chief for a moment. "What can I do for you?"
Avatar
Rogan smiles with the offer, "First, I'd like to thank you for your hospitality, considering the lay of the land. On my end, I'd like to offer you some support toward removing the Gate and monster invaders. So, what you could do for me is a number of things. I'll provide you with a field radio that should allow you to keep in contact with the other two main settlements on this continent. Sharing information between cities is one thing. Along with that, I'm asking for your notes on the types of creatures your city has fought, and tips for all of us to use against similar creatures. Last, I want to fire on the Gate, but I don't know if it will react with return energy fire, despite an 8km distance, similarly to how a creature we just faced was able to send an energy blast that distance. But. Before we go that far, I want to know your thoughts, as leader of Kaijadomo, on destroying the Gate."
Avatar
They would be happy with the gate being destroyed if Greystar is unable to equip the people here to industrially farm what comes through. Lightning regularly travels large distances and the fact that it went 8 kilometers when aided by a creature is not much of a mystery to them, nor especially shocking. They have seen many creatures with lots of different abilities. The gate is a connection to a world that does not follow the same rules as this one.
Avatar
Rogan's optimism for any kind of Save the Gate option has been shot with their experience with the Jelly-pede. He tells the leader, "Unfortunately, even the one creature we faced had the power to blast through starship hull. And considering none of the surviving settlements on the planet have been able to expand past their walls, things won't change as-is. It would take a significant amount of warriors taken from each settlement regularly, along with firepower, to meet the creatures as they come out of the Gate. At least a well-equipped Company. And then, there would need to be a hunting Company or two to seek and destroy them as they surface. How many could you put into those troops?"
Avatar
"Manpower would not be the problem, the problem is the weapons technologies to bring them down without massive losses. Bodies to fill regiments of soldiers are the one thing this planet has in abundance"
Avatar
"But those regiments would not last long with the things we have now, pikes and blackpowder weapons- even cannon sized, are often times not enoguh to bring these things down quickly"
Avatar
(Sorry, work's getting busy and family came in for the weekend.) Rogan nods, and offers this, "So, what I understand is that it may be possible to start beating back the creatures, if you had the weaponry to arm your warfighters. And I'll ask you to estimate the count of those capable of ranged firing so that I can talk to Greystar Command about outfitting heavy weapons in the numbers this planet would need. For this, the planet needs a unified force, not simply each location getting handouts. And Greystar would be providing this help over and over as losses are taken, knowing that it could be many months before the planet is safe enough to allow people to rebuild farms and mines and spread out. Wouldn't you say that is a fair understanding of the situations?"
Avatar
"The settlements are thousands of kilometers apart. Unless you plan to also provide heavy vehicles you are going to have to make do with individually aiding each settlement. The radios you've provided are helpful, and we can communicate, but the distance between us remains the same. You seem to be talking out of both sides of your face Agent. You are saying Greystar could or would help us, but won't because our cities are spread out, and people might die with your equipment on hand?"
Avatar
"I think you are missing the ability of ships and aircraft to transport troops and equipment long distances. As for why Greystar will or will not assist you, the distance between your cities is not a part of that. What is a part of that is how your people work together, and how they will work with us as we provide weaponry."
Avatar
"but you've only just today, just moments ago given us radio technology. What are your expectations for this, a planetary peace treaty while you stand here listening?" He seems perplexed and altogether unsure of the point of this meeting. "I am trying to keep as many of my people alive as I can. I am not trying to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what you are actually telling me, or what you are telling us we need to do"
Avatar
"I suppose I'll make this simpler then. What is Greystar prepared to do about the gate? Are you going to destroy it? or are you going to give us equipment to fight the monsters that come out of it? Or is Greystar not planning on aiding us at all at this time?
Avatar
"I appreciate your trying to understand and thank you for that. Strange as it may seem to work out a planetary peace treaty, considering you are just now getting the ability to talk to your distant neighbors, it is exactly the starting point I would like to have for coordination of this fight against the monsters. I assume that you don't want to deplete your manpower alone in the fight. As to Greystar, I will be asking for the resources for you, and have already invested my own resources in your planet along with what they may provide. I have more to invest, so I want to make sure that what we do is done most efficiently because it will cost both lives and material. I will probably also ask for material to trade to speed up the process of getting these weapons and defense equipment." "As for the Gate, I am concerned that it will act like the Jelly-pede we faced earlier. If so, I do not have a safe way to destroy it, let alone a safe way to confirm its defense capabilities. We'll need to organize a fighting unit specifically because it isn't safe. I still need to drop off another radio, and figure out how Last Hope can communicate with you. If these fighting units can be organized, we may not need to destroy the Gate. But we do need to work toward making sure the monsters can be defeated repeatedly."
Avatar
"The settlements of this world were never at war with one another and the threat of the monsters would have them too preoccupied to do much when it comes to fighting one another. They already have units organized for the defense of their homes, and the large distances between settlements means you'd have to make do with regional forces for the time being. "
Avatar
"I have enough air transport capability to move squads of personnel and equipment, so potentially, we could still put together Joint Forces fireteams to be a visible show that the regional forces are not alone." "I'll head south to Wrogen Pass to give them a radio as well. I'll have them contact you as soon as possible. Do you have any questions, besides how much equipment I am bringing back? I won't know that until I contact Greystar Command."
Avatar
They don’t, they won’t until something more happens. Business and life as usual are not going to change for now
Avatar
Rogan thanks them for the meeting, and has the Chieftain pick him up. "We'll drop off the last radio at the Wrogen Pass," he says as he makes sure it's communicating with the other two radios.
Avatar
Wrogan Pass is everything you remember from Agent Harpers report. The three towers are strong, stone, and look to have seen more combat recently. A second mega-creature has been felled in the plains since the last report and several vehicles are out at the site now picking over the corpses. Bone makes building material, the organs are being experimented with in the very limited ways those with the aptitude here can, and so on. Several motorbikes look to be relieving or adding to the scavenging group as you fly over
Avatar
Rogan has them set down near the recovery site, calling to the Harbinger and scientists to get ready to land once we get approval. Rogan makes sure their weapons are facing outward and the people don't appear to see them as threatening as they get lower. He'll also have the Comms Tech try to contact them to let them know we're offering some support with their scientific research on the creature.
Avatar
They don't have a way to communicate with you until you've disembarked to talk to someone. Your intentions and messages are unheard by the scavengers, who are drawing back to a safe position as your ship sets down near their work
Avatar
(Busy couple days. I'll do a write up in the AM)
Avatar
(Sounds good)
Avatar
Rogan exits the Chieftain alone, waving and walking slowly toward the nearest scavengers until some start moving toward him. He stops walking at that point to make sure that he looks non-aggressive toward their kill. Once they are in range to communicate, he introduces himself, "I am Rogan Tuttle, here on behalf of the Greystar Confederacy, and I might be able to help with researching that monster you've got there. One of my craft has a Lab and a couple of scientists, and I'd be happy to work together with you on learning what we can. What do you say?"
Avatar
There is some exchanging of orders with their base back in the tower, after a half hour of exchange they agree to be helped while their security personnel look on with wariness
Avatar
Rogan has the Chieftain radio back to the Harbinger, arranging its landing and having the Chieftain remain on alert standby while the two craft are on the ground. He invites the scientists and Doc out of the craft to examine what is left.
Avatar
(What would Rogan be doing during this time?)
Avatar
Rogan makes sure that the scientists and Doc have CFUs on whenever they are off-ship, and talks to the lead of the security team. "I apologize for adding some extra people for your folks to keep an eye out for. If it would make the area cleaner, I can have the Chieftain fly air cover instead of being on the ground. If you want someone to have a bird's eye view, she's got a second railgun to man while I'm here. You're welcome to put someone onboard. I can give the person a quick training for it, and they'll be in constant radio contact with this ship."
Avatar
"and what will you be doing during this time?"
17:26
"The people and resources are helpful, but we are unsure what to do for you, or what you are aiming to accomplish with your sudden landing"
Avatar
Rogan nods, "I am mostly hoping to make sure that our resources are being useful. Having our science vessel and crew here to study the remains may give insight into the creatures. Plus, I would like to improve the planetary labs, and more, so having your folks see that up-close is just a start." He considers another side of the question, and points to himself, "Me, personally? Mostly, I want to be available for questions and to direct my folks if things get hairy. After this, we'll be heading to the Pass. I have a long-range radio so you-all can communicate with two other cities on the continent. With some more support, I feel like this planet should be able to take to the offensive against these monsters."
Avatar
(you're at the pass)
19:20
(the three towers are the closest structures to it)
Avatar
(Sorry, I meant visiting leadership of the Pass more than just being nearby. I could clarify IC, if that wasn't clear.)
Avatar
On the horizon, a battered looking skimmer looks to be making its way over. You can see more soldiers on its long deck, and it looks more like a longship sailing on sand than water. 50m away from the monster corpses, the skimmer sets down and the masked soldiers begin moving toward you, their elder in tow
Avatar
Rogan asks the lead of the security team, "Is that the normal set of guards for the elder? They normally wear masks?" Mentally, Rogan opens his connection to the Pilot of the Link, "Can you bring the Link down to an altitude of about 1-1/2 km. I may need you down here quickly, but I don't want to alert them."
Avatar
“They do. They can’t afford to be rendered blind or disoriented by any of the creatures that we might encounter out here”
00:57
You can see eye lenses within the masks changing as they emerge from the shadow of the vehicle and into the sunlight
Avatar
(To the Pilot) "False alarm, it seems. I'm glad you're up there backing me up." Rogan then waves to the elder and guards as he walks, relaxed toward them. When they get close enough, he greets them, "I'm Greystar Agent Rogan Tuttle. I heard that you got to meet with Agent Harper, and he relayed your status. I've come to meet with you, help you get in communication with your distant neighbors, and help you take back the planet from these creatures," that last part he says with an arm gesture to the creatures. "I really hope that we can also lend a hand in finding better ways to use some of the carcass parts."
Avatar
"It is something we have always endeavored to do. We do not have the luxury of throwing anything away here without trying to find a better use first"
Avatar
"I have a radio setup for you to make and keep contact with the other two settlements in range, Kaijadomo and OcyenHoryn. I want the taking back of the planet to be a joint operation with all four settlements (including Last Hope) to be a part of. Even if, for the earliest period, local defense teams are organized to be loaded up into transports to fight a monster that is discovered. To help fill-out the weaponry and transports used in these operations, I would like you to start planning for a couple of things: (1) Organizing a fire team of ranged shooters that can be fairly-quickly trained in firing heavy weapons that are higher technology than you currently have. Likewise, drivers for overland vehicles that will mount those heavy weapons or carry part of the fire teams. I am looking at a minimum of company-sized groups for that. (2) Work with Greystar on trade goods that you can offer to help offset the cost of these vehicles, which I expect will be hit by attrition." "Give me a moment, please. I will get that radio and batteries to last you quite a long time. And, I'll be bringing battery charging equipment as more equipment can be brought." Rogan goes and brings back the radio and batteries.
Avatar
"We cannot agree to anything more than in principle before it happens. Any solution that allows us to build and leave the city walls with confidence is something we can try. We cannot say more or promise more until the nature of your support is determined, and is delivered"
Avatar
Rogan nods, "That's all I would ask. For now, I want to make sure that you have the radio and understand how to use it and change batteries. My science team will keep looking at these carcasses while we can. After we're done, I'll head back to Last Hope to see if we can get them into your communications, since they are a little farther away."
Avatar
(They can take samples, any kind of breakthrough is going to be a lot more time than you probably plan to be spending here)
Avatar
(Samples are good. We'll have some downtime between planetary travel and travel to/from Acastus, plus the time needed to load up the cargo.)
Avatar
(I'm flying most of the day tomorrow, so no rush.) Rogan tells the elder that he'll make sure that each settlement (is kept) in the loop, in regards to what support will be arriving. That will at least include equipment and training. "Hopefully, I'll have equipment for more than one company team, and by that time each city will have plenty of volunteers to fill out the mobile force." (edited)
Avatar
(I don’t think there’s much more for us to do here until the equipment is delivered. I think we can call this a success)

(We would have to buy the fitting again if you plan to re Mount it , the science thing is once again not going to be part of an adventure. That’s stuff we are going to figure out with research points over time assuming the council votes for it There’s plenty of big issues around the polity if we want to do something else , or we can return and try to get the support you promised mobilized out here )
Avatar
(Rebuying the fitting is fine. Might be best to buy the proper comm system and then replace it. Either way, although buying the fitting probably is less overhead for you, so we can do that.)

(Yeah less overhead. That’s close enough )

(5 days of downtime back to Acastus)
Avatar
(We're heading to Acastus to meet up and get the equipment destined for Mikas. Downtime 5 days, Stab 0: 60->65/90)
Avatar
(yes, that is what I just said, 5 days from Mikas to Acastus)
Avatar
Rogan brings in the spacecraft to Acastus, looking forward to getting them loaded, almost nervous at having them fully loaded with what they'll carry. He talks to his own crew individually, affirming that they've been successful so far and are on our way toward helping Mikas. For the drivers and techs, Rogan will ask each to volunteer to help train the crews that will be running and maintaining the vehicles.
Avatar
Their plan is to train the locals and then leave the planet as soon as possible after. None of those hired are especially eager about the assignment and the incredible levels of danger associated with it. Loading takes several hours and each of your vessels is packed full of weapons and the vehicles you promised to deliver. Return visits will need many more tons of weapons and those promise to be expensive. Finding a benefactor, or sympathetic ears among the polity council is likely the best course of action it seems.
Avatar
(How much expense will the 40 tons of weapons and equipment cost for this run? He has 300k+ credits, so he may be able to pay out of pocket up front.)
Avatar
(we won't worry about this first run, im setting you up to start thinking about w hat to have ideas on before the second)

(Thanks! We're heading to Mikas with the first delivery. Downtime 5 days, Stab 0: 65->70/90) Once loaded, Rogan will make sure the three craft stick together through the trip, and let them know that he'll confirm the landing and unload location with the Mikas leaders as soon as they can be raised on Comms, which he will test from Acastus, but will ask the Comms Tech to raise Mikas leadership upon arrival in system space for a conference call.
Avatar
(any message sent to them from acastus would be one day per hex, with the instant comms its shortened to 2 days from 5 but you'[d be there before there is an answer, and only the city with FTL comms could hear you. We also need to spend the credits to get FTL comms back on the cheiftain)
Avatar
(Thanks, and subtracted the 25k this morning. That comms timing should work out perfectly. If Last Hope replies to the test, we would receive it enroute [sorry if it's busywork, it's really just Rogan wanting to make sure they are functional]. The in-system [off-planet] comms would also be entirely through Last Hope, too. If they have to wait until they are in shortwave range to have the conference call with the other leaders, that can wait until then. He'll make sure every settlement is accounted for [on the radio] before they start.) (edited)
Avatar
(no, you can't get comms in spike space, so you wouldn't get it en route)
Avatar
(No worries. A half test is still a test.)
Avatar
Arriving in the Mikas system your three ship flotilla exits spike space. A message back dated from a successful test hits your comms terminal, though some of the content of it is lost. You're able to get enough of a signal within six hours and reaching orbit to have the representatives of each settlement on line in a group call.
Avatar
Rogan starts out, "I am glad to tell you all that we have three ship-loads of equipment ready to land and begin the process for outfitting your forces to take the fight to the monsters. More are scheduled to start arriving in [translated date from Y5M1]. I hope you've had time to talk about the order (which settlements first, etc.) that you'd like the deliveries and trainings to be done. This first one should be done at a single settlement. Like I've tried to say -in the mind of Joint Operations- it would be easy enough to gather a squad of twelve each from each of the other settlements to train together and fight as one team. We can start with that discussion unless you all have already decided."
Avatar
Each settlement has voted for itself, and there doesnt seem to be any way the votes can be swayed - as predicted when you are dangling something critical for survival in front of a community. No one will choose the survival of a neighbor at the possible sacrifice of themselves.
Avatar
Noting the difficulty in choosing, Rogan takes a turn, "It was probably an impossible dilemma to have you try to learn about each other and choose a settlement to defend first. If you would consider this group a Counsel, and provide Greystar a vote for a total of five, I would offer ideas to perhaps help to choose a good solution. For instance, if we considered the closest settlement to the Gate as a risk that should be reduced, Last Hope would be a strong choice for the first delivery. If we look at the Wrogen Pass as a funnel that holds monsters from coming to three settlements, giving the equipment to them would affect the most settlements. If we look at the settlement with the highest population, they could receive the equipment, but then send those defenders to Wrogen Pass to affect the most settlements. I would recommend that last option, unless someone has a compelling argument otherwise." He adds, "Keep in mind that the goal is to go on the offensive against these creatures. By doing that, we cut down the threat to each city. We also need goods to trade to buy more of what I have in my ships. We'll talk about that after we get this re-voted on." Unless there's another option that they bring up, Rogan will ask them to vote on one of the three: 1) Closest [Last Hope], 2) Most Central [Wrogen Pass], or 3) Biggest City sends 300 trainees to Wrogen Pass. Rogan would put his vote to the last one unless the others seemed to like 1 or 2. (edited)
Avatar
THey all still vote for their own city
16:07
You have dangled life saving aid in their faces and told them to fight for it. They are in the only way they can.
Avatar
(Which is the most populous settlement? Ooh, for this vote, there were only 3 options, so at least 1 city would need to abstain if they didn't want to vote 1,2, or 3) (edited)
Avatar
THey do not care about the conditions of your vote. You have dangled life saving aid in their faces and they will stop at nothing to secure it for themselves.
19:42
Setting arbitrary rules is only frustrating the various delegations you have contacted. They continue to lobby for their own settlements to be the first that you pick.
Avatar
Rogan tells them, "I could only afford to purchase one city's equipment, so I'll need each of you to support this so that together we can get more. I'd like each of you to let me know how much trade goods I can expect to return with so we can purchase more as soon as possible. In the meantime, I want to confirm a landing location at Last Hope."
Avatar
They once again refuse to pick a city. Last Hope reports that if you land there it had better be to turn over aid, or they will ensure you come home in a pine box
Avatar
"That's the plan. Not the pine box part. The aid. Direct us in, Last Hope."
Avatar
Your ships begin descending toward Last Hope and you can already see dozens of figures on the ground outside the city, looking upwards and rushing about in frantic motions. You're unable to see if they are armed but it is safe to presume they are.
Avatar
(No adjustments to the landing.) So the available drivers and techs along with Rogan will assist with loading the gear, and give cursory training to the locals on how to drive these into their storage facilities. When available, Rogan will work out with the leader where they want training to be accomplished. (edited)

As you land the locals begin surging out of the settlement in an anti-Greystar riot. They rush the three spacecraft. Many fire weapons into the air and hold up signs and other symbols of protest against a government so cruel they would dangle hope in front of good people and then force them to beg for it at the expense of a neighbor. The crew seals the ramp behind you abandoning you to your fate on the surface of this world. You don’t see the axe blow that ends your life as you’re surrounded by screaming Last Hope citizens.
